Windows 10: Word 2016 (office 365 subscription) docx saving slow

I noticed an issue when saving Word docx files on Office 2016. It's slow, I see a progress bar at the bottom right when it saves and it takes about 30 seconds to save. Okay it's large file with a couple hundred pages and a few hundred kb in size but surely it shouldn't take this long? If I save files on older 97-2003 doc format the saves are more or less instant. It's worth noting that opening the docx file up is instantaneous, no lag. As a test I created another docx file a couple hundred pages large and just filled it with gobbledegook. The same issue when I saved it! I tried switching to my wife's user account to test further and same issue, so it's not user account specific. It may also be worth noting that although it's 365 I default my save location to be local.

Now a caveat, this happens only on manual saves within word. If I finish editing and close word it prompts me to save on exit. The file will then save in a milli second!!!

I tried the same docx file on my older (much weaker) laptop and saved it locally and it saves it much quicker (1 sec approx.). The older laptop runs Office 2010.

Is this a common problem? Maybe I have a setting in office causing this but I wouldn't know what to start on. There's nothing obvious and the setup of Word that I have is pretty much default. I am not noticing same issue on other office applications such as excel. It seems to specifically relate to docx files!

I have the exact same symptoms as everyone here, some suggestions say disable hardware acceleration but this relates to 2013 and I cannot find this option in 2016 unless I am being dense!

EDIT 2 Ok found disable hardware acceleration. Disabled it no effect. Then found an option for 'allow background saves'. Disabled that and it seems to of fixed it. This is a bad bug that has manifested itself from 2013 and is still an issue. Whilst reasonably happy one shouldn't have to disable a feature like this to make it work. Anyway I hope someone has further pearls of wisdom or at the very least somebody will see this thread and be able to implement the workaround to make things work well again.

Windows 10 File Explorer Preview Pane Word Doc fix

Same deal for me. Windows 10, Office 2016 from 365 subscription. Ever since office 2016 was installed no preview for .docx files. All other formats including Excel and PP preview fine.

 

Scanning documents

Hi emev, if your scanner software does not have the option to scan to Word file, save the scan as a PDF

Then open Word

Choose File Open and open the PDF file from inside Word - modern versions of Word (2016, 365) have the ability to open PDF files which you can then save as a docx file and edit in Word
