Windows 10: Word Document Error - Cannot open file

Hi Guys,My husband has been working on a file for work for a few days that he saved to the desktop. Unfortunately this morning after a computer update the file now will no longer open and is showing the following message.He has Windows 11 and I have tried to:1.uninstall the last update on the computer2.open the file in safe mode3.Restore the text and restore the file using the restore functions in wordAll of which haven't helped. Does anyone have any other suggestions to recover the text from the file?Thanks so much in advance! :-

Do you get an error when trying to open Word documents, and if so, is that for all documents and what is printed on that error?

Can you open Word form its application icon, and if so, if you go to File - Open, can you open a Word document form there, rather than double clicking a Word document?

As an initial step, follow these steps to perform a full repair of your Office installation . . .

Open Control Panel - Programs and Features

Click Microsoft Office in the list of installed applications

At the top, click 'Change'

On the resulting dialog, click 'Repair' - choose the Online Repair, it is a comprehensive fix

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation . . .

NOTE: Please be advised, if you are running Office 2013 or earlier, before attempting a repair, have your Microsoft Office Product Key at hand, Office may need to be re-activated in some cases

 

Word opening files as Document1, Document2

This was the ticket. The .docx extension was associated with a word document template file type.

I used Nirsoft's File Types Manager software to correct this and now everything works fine.

That is, I open the document itself (not two copies or one copy), for reading or editing, if I:

• Double-click on the file which I usually do
• Right-click on the file and pick "open with > Word"
• Right-click on the file and pick "open"

Prior to your help and my fixing it, only the third option above worked.

microsoft word 2003

I have a lot of ms word files on my pc. But one of them showed me an error - Getting unknown error messages while opening (.doc) or (.docx) files. I don't know how to open my word file or repair microsoft word. Any suggestions, guys, please.
