I just discovered that the Windows 10 development environment virtual machine is a thing.

So the obvious thing to do with that is turn it into a Vagrant base image and share it on the Hashicorp public directory so everyone can benefit from the reuse.

When the box is getting close to expiry, get a hold of the next build and re-publish a new one.

Everyone gets to develop and test in Microsoft 10 more easily. Microsoft gets happier developers, and I get a test environment base box for Microsoft I can use for internal QA. It's all great!

Seems totally reasonable, but on a cursory reading of the licence terms, it seems like this might be a breach.

    For example:

    5. BACKUP COPY. You may make one backup copy of the software. You may use it only to reinstall the software

    Or:

(iv) Use in a virtualized environment. This license allows you to install only one instance of the software for use on one device, whether that device is physical or virtual. If you want to use the software on more than one virtual device, you must obtain a separate license for each instance.

The whole point of a Vagrant base image is to relentlessly create, stand up, destroy as many different environment configurations as you need, whenever you need. Those expectations don't seem to work well with this licence... But that seems really unreasonable and a pointless loss of utility that would benefit everyone involved.

Then if I were making it publicly available, then a whole bunch of other people would in principle be able to do that too.

Hence why I'm checking first. Want to be a good by and not get in trouble.

Am I being overly cautious, or is this a fair reading of the licence terms?

    :)

vagrant under cmder on Windows 10 does nothing; works under cmd.exe

I have a fresh Windows 10 64-bit install, which I'm attempting to set up for development.

    I have

    • downloaded and installed cmder, then rebooted
    • downloaded and installed Vagrant, then rebooted
    • downloaded and installed VirtualBox, then rebooted
    • set VAGRANT_HOME=c:\vagrant
    • used VBoxManage setproperty machinefolder c:\virtualbox-machines
    • acquired my department's VagrantFile, and modified it to suit my filesystem.

In cmder, if I now run

I get no output. No failure codes, no windows errors, no logs from vagrant. The same is true of all vagrant commands, up to and including vagrant --version and vagrant --help. Other commands work fine in cmder.

However, if I run a basic command line, cmd.exe, then the vagrant box add command completes correctly. An, as far as I know, identical setup worked under Windows 7 32-bit.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?

Would setting up a Vagrant base box built on the Windows 10 Developer VM be a breach of the...

Running docker inside an (ubuntu) vagrant box on Windows 10

I've just recently been introduced to Docker, my knowledge of how it works is quite limited and I'm currently constrained by time in deciding on which way to go.

    • Was running Windows 10 Home, could not install Docker for Windows, installed Docker Toolbox but was not able to get up and running easily
    • Upgraded to Windows 10 Professional. Installed Docker for Windows. After a couple of hours it seemed I had things working. Hyper-V enabled means my old vagrant machines (using Virtualbox) no longer work. Docker did not seem to have any network (internet) connectivity. Gave up for now, disabled Hyper-V, back to vagrant

I've been thinking that I could setup a vagrant box, or just an Ubuntu VM, using Virtualbox, and perhaps get Docker up and running on that.

This is for the purpose of working on a PHP7/Nginx/Laravel application

My questions are - should this work ok? Would there be performance issues? My experience with Ubuntu is that it's a lot more straightforward to get these kinds of things working, for example, Docker, than it is on Windows.

Furthermore, what could I look for in a pre-existing vagrant box, that would allow me to get setup as quickly as possible with Docker (running on the vagrant box)?

    Thanks!
