  1. Wrong Primary Monitor and won't change

Hi everyone, so I got a new PC and before used Windows 10 but now finally Windows 11. However after getting the right cable for my second small monitor, I noticed that it was for some reason declared as the primary monitor monitor 1. I used the "set as main display" feature on the big monitor that I want to have as monitor one but the number simply won't change, not even after a restart or after switching that feature around from monitor to monitor. I tried all troubleshoots that I could find on the web but nothing helped. Plugged it into another port, restarted of course, disconnected the s

  2. UAC showing up off the primary monitor. How do I insure the UAC will be on the primary monitor?

Thank you very much for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm more than happy to assist you.

Would you mind giving these steps a try and then informing me of the outcome?

    1. Ensure that your primary monitor is correctly set.
      • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
      • In the display settings, select the monitor you want to set as primary and check the box Make this my main display.
    2. Sometimes, adjusting the UAC settings can help.
      • Type UAC in the Windows search bar and select "Change User Account Control settings."
      • Move the slider to the desired level of notification and click "OK."
    3. If the UAC prompt appears on a different monitor, you can manually move it to the primary monitor. Windows should remember this position for future prompts.
      • When the UAC prompt appears, use the mouse to drag it to the primary monitor.
      • Close the prompt and try triggering it again to see if it appears on the primary monitor.
    4. If the above methods do not work, you can try editing the registry to force the UAC prompt to appear on the primary monitor:
      • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.
      • Look for a key named PromptOnSecureDesktop. If it does not exist, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with this name.
      • Set the value of PromptOnSecureDesktop to 1.
      • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
    5. Another method involves adjusting the position of the command prompt window, which can sometimes influence where the UAC prompt appears:
      • Open Command Prompt, right-click on the title bar and select Properties.
      • Go to the Layout tab and set the Window Position values for Left and Top to 0.
      • Click OK and close the Command Prompt. Reopen it to see if the UAC prompt now appears on the primary monitor.

If you are still having issues after trying these steps, please let me know. I'll be happy to help.

  3. Change primary alias

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply,

As per description, when you click to change the primary on nothing happens.

Have you tried to perform the troubleshooting steps provided under section

If you have not performed the troubleshooting steps I would suggest you perform steps under
Change which alias is primary , from my previous post. Which are as follow.

  4. Wrong Primary Monitor and won't change

Menu dialog box displayed on wrong monitor.

My computer has two monitors. Both have the same native resolution, 1920 x 1200. Many times when I move windows from one monitor to the other, the Menu bar drop downs remain on the original monitor. This happens with multiple, but not all apps. So, I'm not sure whether this is a Windows thing or not.

    My Computer setup:

    • I have two computers connected through a IOGear GCS1944 Dual View Display Port KVMP to the monitors, mouse and keyboard.
    • The primary monitor is driven from the Display Port on the computers, and the secondary monitor is driven from the HDMI port, through an HDMI to DP adapter,
    • My monitors are arranged such that the primary (1) display is at the center of my work area and the secondary (2) monitor is to the left. The setting are set to Extend these Displays.
    • When I switch from my main computer to a different computer and then switch back, All the windows are relocated to the primary monitor in the same relative position. Sometimes I hear the 'Device Disconnect' sound but I always hear the 'Device Connect' sound.
    • When I move the windows back to the secondary monitor, the Menu dialogs are still displayed on the primary monitor.
What steps can I take to keep the windows on the selected monitor and prevent the Menu drop downs from remaining stuck on the wrong monitor.

System: Windows 10 Pro, version 21H2.
