Windows 10: WTF just happened?!

Once your BIOS is set up, you can usually save the BIOS settings for future recovery. To find out all about your INTEL CPU you could try using CPU-Z CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID *Smile

Always have a CMOS battery in reserve - mine normally only last 2-3 years since I power off and unplug my PC when it's not in use.

 

If you use the Windows Key + R , and type in winver then enter you will be told what version you have , your pic of MSconfig. says you are on .420 hardware layer which is why I thought you may not be on the latest, though it may have updated since then ?
IF you have AU you will be on 1607 , if like me and have not done AU yet you should be on .545. Actually I am unsure why this computer has not done AU yet, my Surface and another Computer have.





I think if you are on Win10 Home , you cannot deny major Updates like .380.420 etc only minor Updates and ones for "Other M$ Software", I am not sure if it is the same on Pro or not? My default time for Updates is 3:30AM if I leave it set to automatic and did wake once to find my Old netbook with Home updating itself in the middle of the night. Now I set it for download but notify to install , so at least I know what is going on.

I was happy with Win7 too , but am slowly getting used to 10 along with plenty of reading and helping here by others on the Forums. I don't think you could rollback still unless it is les than 30 days but you could do a Clean install of 7 and upgrade again in a year or two if on the same Computer for free since it is already registered. Win7 does not lose support till 2020 or something , so nothing to worry about there. They said they stopped with WinXP but an oild system i still have for one Program still updates itself each time I turn it on, about once a month to do Accounts.

Kbird, just did that and it now says version 1511 build 10586.545.

Guess when I see black screens and it won't respond, it may be doing the fricking updates and not telling me ( WTF Microsoft ) and I should leave it alone, EVEN IF I NEED MY PC and let it finish - NOT turn off power. I HATE THAT if that's what it is! I'm running a part time home based business here!

When it "upgraded" it said it was installing Windows 10 Pro. Not sure why, being I think I had Home Essentials before.

I frankly don't know what to do now. I'd like to get a refurbed Asus with Win 8.1, and there are some nice deals around - just don't want all the hassles of having to get all my software over to it.

In Updates>Advanced settings make sure you are on notify to schedule restart if still on .545





Once you get/do AU/1607 there is a new option to not allow updates , (which you can schedule ) during certain hours , for Business hours for example .

If you really don't like 10 then , just reinstall 7 , unless you already have a 8.1 licence ? then that machine is capable of running it , there are even drivers for 8.1 on Asus Site I saw yest. Both do require the Clean Install Option though.

You could get the 1607 ISO and do an InPlace Upgrade , which should retain all programs and setting etc .

Dont forget to change that CMOS battery......

 

You might already know what the latest Windows 10 is.....



But most of us never saw it in our UD. Only way to get the AU is to download the newest ISO from Windows 10. Here is a link and use Option 1, Just mount it on your hard drive and run setup.exe.
Should make a image backup 1st of course. Lots of us had to do it this way. *Smile

...Oh, just found out that there's a latest build of Acronis, this month, and am installing it now.

I'm not sure if that other free software does cloning of a disk but will also check that out. *Biggrin

you can run MR and Acronis on the same system , and yes MR does Cloning , Imaging etc , I have it scheduled a few times a week as Win10 isn't that stable *Smile so I can go back a few days with an image and start again if needed.

 

Don't mean to butt in BUT Macrium does a much better job of Cloning.....using their making a complete image, instead of using its cloning Option. I used to own and run Acronis for years, but it has become full of boated extras that you don't need.

If speed is your main criteria, than 8.1Pro is the fastest of them all, surpasses 10.
