WU error 0x800705b4 and strage WindowsUpdate.log file

Win 10 Pro x32 1511 (10586.916). When I manually start Windows Update, it runs for 20+ minutes, then gives 0x800705b4 error. When I uncheck "give me updates for other Microsoft products," Windows Update will complete normally, but once I enable "other Microsoft products" again then WU produces the error. Ran the troubleshooter several times, to no apparent effect.

It appears that when Windows Update starts itself, it complete without an error, but it doesn't update the "last checked" date.

WindowsUpdate.log told me I had to run the PowerShell script, resulting log is full of lines that look like this:
Is there a different log that I should look at?

    :)

  2. need fix for cumulative update for windows 10 version 1607 for x64 systems (KB3197954 - Error 0x8e5e0152

Well something is wrong. The fact that DISM can't see it would be consistent with the fact that WU can't proceed. Try looking for clues in those other diagnostics I mentioned, especially the WindowsUpdate.log for which you would need to use PowerShell
    Get-WindowsUpdateLog

Looks like WindowsUpdate.log is still broken in 1607. It's useless. The only alternative that I am aware of is so arcane I haven't even tried it yet.

    C.f.

    WindowsUpdate.log unreadable

Then I think the only option you have left is using ReportingEvents.log to find a timestamp for something interesting and then using that to make sure that you are looking at a relevant piece of CBS.log which might help explain it. Not having WindowsUpdate.log
is really limiting IMO because we lose the reaction that WU is making to the error conditions (whatever they are).

update with error 0x80070005: 2017-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4022725).

Something is inhibiting updates. BitDefender? Consider uninstalling that?

Your WindowsUpdate.log doesn't go back that far but it definitely can implicate BitDefender as a possible interferer for updates that you want to be allowed. So, if nothing else, uninstalling BitDefender should clean up your logging.

BTW thanks for including the WU log.

WU error 0x800705b4 and strage WindowsUpdate.log file

Hmm, the discussion in this thread makes it sound like those "1600/12/31" entries in WindowsUpdate.log are not unusual in 1511. So perhaps not something to worry about. But I'm still getting the error on manually running Windows Update, and am lacking a useful log file to diagnose. Any suggestions, folks?

BTW, most recent attempt was to clean-boot the machine; same error on running WU.

Did the above bat file fix windows updates?
Are you on a domain, server etc?
Do you prefer 1511? Have you considered upgrading to windows 1703?
In administrative command prompt run: sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Please post the results for each.

Nope, bat file didn't fix it.
SFC and DISM both reported no problems. (CBS.log is too big to attach)
Not on a domain; computer is on a regular old home network.
It's not that I prefer 1511, but rather have been unable to successfully install 1607 or 1703. I do realize that I need to get off of 1511 by September and will probably have to throw some serious hours at it; in the meantime I just want 1511 to be getting current patches!

Hi, please run this .bat file - unblock it and run it twice as administrator, then restart PC.

    Hope this works,

Thanks, I'll give that a try tonight when I'm home from work. By the way, after everything last night I looked at WindowsUpdate.log again, the only lines that aren't like the ones that I quoted above were these:

Nope, that bat file didn't help. I did manage, I think, to isolate the problem to updates for the 2007 Office Compatibility Suite. When I uninstall that, WU runs and completes fine. When I reinstall it, WU gives me updates for it, through 2013, nothing newer, and returns 0x800705b4

May be used to indicate that the device has stopped responding (hung). The device may need to be manually reset. You have multiple options:

See if any of the following help:

    1) place your computer in clean boot:

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows

    2) open control panel then troubleshooting then run the windows update troubleshooter again

    3) attempt windows updates while in clean boot

    4) look for any KB numbers that failed to update

    5) update each KB number manually from the Microsoft web site:

    Microsoft Update Catalog

    6) consider an in place upgrade:

WU error 0x800705b4 and strage WindowsUpdate.log file

No luck on running troubleshooter and WU in clean mode ... and no information given about which updates failed. And I've already done an in-place reinstallation. I think I'm done throwing hours at this, seems to make more sense to throw my next 20 hours at a return to my efforts to get 1607 or 1703 to install and run properly.

Zbook, Werty, thanks for your efforts!
