X299 Motherboard driver issue (Renesas µPD720200 USB Controller)

    Hi to all,

I have recently completed a system build project and in doing so encountered a frustrating "code 10" driver error on a freshly clean installed, fully updated 64 bit Windows 10 Pro (Version 1909, OS Build 18363.565) which is 'vanilla' with no other software currently installed.

The system build is constructed around the recently released Asus Prime X299 Edition 30 motherboard and a i9-7900x CPU, this full-featured board whilst incorporating current tech advances however lacks adequate conventional USB port provision. As a result it seemed prudent to add two further Gen 1, USB 3.0 ports by way of a surplus Asus U3S6 add-on PCIe card.

I have two of these cards available (both are Rev1.0G models) one of which continues to serve me well in an aging Asus P6T7 X58 system running successfully on 64 bit Windows 10 Pro (currently 1909 as above) for many years. Both cards are fully updated to receive the latest available firmware for their respective SATA & USB controller chips. (Marvell 88SE9120-NAA2 SATA controller chip (V1.0 0.1038) and the Nec D720200F1 (Renesas µPD720200 USB xHCI) USB Controller Chip (V3.0.3.4)).

Prior to installation, both cards were successfully tested in the X58 PC before swapping them such that the original working card previously installed in the X58 was now assigned to a spare PCIe X16 rail on the X299 Edition 30 (PCIE 3.0/2.0 X16_3). A pair of SATA BluRay/DVD optical drives were attached to the SATA ports (in order to preserve the on-board SATA ports for conventional SDD/HDD's and also to supplement the Samsung NVMe drives) along with two USB flash drives attached to the card's vacant USB ports for test purposes.

Prior to test, the latest released drivers were installed and the system re-started. The SATA optical drives functioned entirely as expected and both of the attached USB Flash Drives were recognised in Windows 10 with their contents fully accessible. However despite this, 'Device Manager' reports a code 10 error for the 'Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller' with the dreaded yellow warning triangle & it's associated exclamation mark flagged in the devices tree. The U3S6 card was removed from the system and the problem Renesas controller disappeared from Device Manager, re-insertion resulted in the return of the issue thus identifying the U3S6 card as the obvious culprit.

The Renesas device hardware ID is reported as PCI\VEN_1033&DEV_0194 and the latest driver (Renesas V2.1.39.0 - 21.08.12) was manually installed, as previously, with the earlier (fully working) X58 system from which it was removed. Accepting the MS offered alternative did not resolve the issue either so I reverted to the manually installed V2.1.39.0 Renesas driver as before but still without any success in overcoming this frustrating code 10 issue

Alongside Generic Hubs, the X299 Edition 30 offers native Universal Serial Bus Controller support via the ASMedia USB Root Hub (USB\ASMEDIAROOT_Hub&VID1B21&PID2142), ASMedia USB3.1 eXtensible Host Controller (PCI\VEN_1B21&DEV_2142) and Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft) (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A2AF) none of which appear to conflict with the problematic Renesas Host Controller.

I would greatly appreciate any advice/suggestions board members can offer as to why the USB ports should apparently function irrespective of the reported issue with the Renesas Host Controller, what further diagnostic steps should be performed and how best I should proceed to resolve the matter.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind assistance,

    :)

  2. RENESAS USB 3.0 DRIVER NOT WORKING PROPERLY IT WILL NOT RECOGNIZE MOUSE OR WIRELESS KEYBOARD

    Hello Roger,

I understand that the USB port is not working. The issue may arise if the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt or if your PC requires an update for issues that may conflict with a USB device and Windows. This may also occur if
your USB controllers may have become unstable or corrupt. So, I suggest you to try the following steps and check if the issue persists.

    Method 1:

Remove and reinstall all USB controllers.

    • Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X and select
device manager from the list. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    • In the list of hardware categories, find and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click
Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
    • Restart the computer, and let the USB controllers get reinstalled.
    • Plug in the removable USB device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.
    Method 2

The issue could be if the drivers are not updated or get corrupted. So, try to install all of the Windows updates available and if issue persists, try to update the drivers by following the steps provided in the article mentioned below.

    Update drivers in Windows 10

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-in...566-b983195752c1/update-drivers-in-windows-10

    Method 3

If issue persists try the steps provided to uninstall the USB device from Device Manager, uninstall the device drivers from program list and then download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

    Step 1:

Uninstall the Device from Device Manager

    • Open Device Manger by clicking on
      Windows key + X
      and selecting Device manager
      from the list.
    • Expand the USB section.
    • Find the USB device.
    • Right click USB and select Uninstall.
    • Select the check box delete the driver software for this device.
    • Reboot the computer after uninstall process has finished.
    Step 2:

Uninstall the Device Drivers from Program List in Control Panel

    • Click on start, select Control Panel
    • Now click on Programs and select Programs and Features.
    • Find the USB.
    • Right click USB driver and select
      Uninstall.
    • Reboot the computer after the uninstall process has finished.
    Step 3:

Download and install the latest drivers for the USB from the manufacturer website

Hope this would help. If issue still persists post back with current status of your computer and result of proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

Renesas to Revise µPD72020x USB 3.0 Controller Unit Price

Since neither Intel nor AMD have concrete plans in place to fully integrate USB 3.0 SuperSpeed controllers into their motherboard chipsets, at least not beyond a couple of ports, the market for third-party controllers is intact. Renesas is planning to make its 2-port PCI-Express 2.0 x1 controllers even more competitive in a market that is now seeing competition, a market which its controllers pioneered. Renesas acquired the USB 3.0 controller IP from NEC. By early 2012, Renesas will be in a position to price its controllers as low as US $1.20 per unit. Compare that to the $5 these controllers cost when they entered the market.

Renesas' mainstream USB 3.0 controllers, the µPD72020x series, are sold in the upstream supplier market for $2 per unit, as competitors' controllers are going for US$1.50-1.70. The company is facing competition from a number of new and established manufacturers, including VIA Labs (VLI), ASMedia, and Etron Technology. While most motherboard manufacturers have, at some point, used NEC/Renesas controllers, the major ones are beginning to move to its competitors. For instance, ASMedia controllers can be seen on newer motherboard models from ASRock and ASUS, Etron can be seen on Gigabyte ones. VLI is emerging as a favorite of USB 3.0 add-on cards.
