Windows 10: Xbox Insider team explains where your feedback goes for Xbox Insiders

The Xbox Insider team receives reports from this community every day. The Xbox One Update Preview builds you’re running, and the feedback you provide us, helps make big things happen on Xbox One!
With a new year on the horizon for Xbox, we want to take a step back and show Xbox Insiders what it’s like to be on our side of the process. So, what happens after you submit your feedback?

The Feedback Process

Reported issues give us end-goals and ways to move upwards. The Xbox One console family is for the Xbox community, and making it a fantastic gaming experience is a team effort—one that includes you!

Here’s a breakdown of what the feedback process looks like:

Report a Problem

The “Report a problem” feature allows Xbox One users to capture their experiences from any Xbox One. The feedback we receive can vary between singular app issues to stability reports particular to an OS build. Prior to releasing a build to an Xbox One Update Preview ring, Team Xbox looks for potential issues before release to the preview rings. But development can be tricky. The data sent to our team—and the issues you report—help us trace the root causes of bugs and work towards resolution.

Identification and Triage

The moment you submit your feedback, it is sent to our database for review. That’s when we take on a triage approach to your reports: sorting through feedback to find high-impact cases and validating experiences from your screenshots, clips, bug descriptions, and data.

Key indicators of how we determine what bugs are “hot” are as follows:

The number of Xbox Insiders experiencing an issue

The details provided to help clearly describe the issue or experience

Whether the bug seriously impacts the stability of the OS build or feature

The outliers—or one-off bugs—that still require attention

If there are recurring bugs (or as we call them, “regressions”) that we believed were resolved

We ensure our reports contain the technical data necessary to track down and fix bugs. It’s important to know why something is impacting Xbox Insiders, and how it can affect the future GA (general availability) release.

Feedback Classification

It’s easier to tell Xbox engineers what is happening in a preview ring when Xbox Insider feedback includes the following:

Screenshots or clips of the experience, where available

Full details of what the Xbox Insider was doing when the issue occurred

Full explanation of the error or issue, even if it is illustrated in an attached screenshot or clip

Whether this has happened before, and in what ring or OS build

Additional details that may be related to the bug

The more details, the better! We classify feedback by their severity and common themes, looking for similarities and probable causes as early as we can. Depending on the severity, we may not wait until the next time we meet with Xbox engineers to alert them of serious issues.

Education and Investigation

What you say matters. The Xbox Insider Team meets with Xbox engineers daily to breakdown our plans for Xbox One and how recent feedback may impact those plans. We have teams dedicated to reproducing specific issues, investigating root causes, and sending data back to engineers for final review.

Engineers Create Solutions

Xbox engineers work round-the-clock to bring new features and OS builds to preview rings. We talked about OS build updates in our last post about preview rings:
“Whenever Team Xbox releases a new build (or feature), the confidence in a ring’s stability helps us determine which ring might receive it.”
It’s important to note that your feedback may not receive a resolution overnight. Because of the considerable amount of engineering legwork that goes into investigation and resolution of an issue, it can take time for those updates to make their way into the preview rings. If your console’s next update doesn’t include the fix you expected, please know that your concerns are still Team Xbox’s priority. While we cannot respond to everyone’s feedback, we’re always listening to what you have to say!

The feedback you send is visible to us and Xbox engineers. We ask that all feedback include helpful details of your experience and respectful language. The Community Standards for Xbox doesn’t just apply to player-to-player interactions.

Now Access Xbox Insider Blog and Xbox Feedback from Xbox Insider Hub

You can now access the Xbox Insider Blog and Xbox Feedback from the Xbox Insider Hub!

Look for new announcements at the top of the Announcements section in the Xbox Insider Hub redirecting to the Xbox Insider Blog or Xbox Feedback.

The Xbox Insider Blog has all the latest news on the Xbox Insider Program including system update release notes, information about game playtests, and content featuring game studios and members of the Xbox Insider community.

Check out our February interview with Robocraft Infinity developers Freejam for some cool insights on the game’s development and inspirations.

Xbox Feedback is the best place to request new features or suggest improvements for Xbox. The feature teams working on Xbox One, Xbox on Windows, Xbox mobile apps, and Xbox Live regularly review the ideas you submit, incorporating them into their work to make your Xbox experience even better.

Xbox Insider Program is the Next Step in Providing Feedback on Xbox

Feedback from our fans is important to all of us here at Xbox, and one of the more popular places to give feedback is through the Xbox Preview Program. Since the program launched in February 2014, your feature requests, ideas, and millions of votes have helped shape and improve your Xbox experience for the whole community. We’re excited to share news about what’s next for the Xbox Preview Program, including some improvements and more ways for fans to help shape the future of Xbox.

The first change is that the Xbox Preview Program is becoming the Xbox Insider Program. This new name reflects how we are expanding to offer opt-in opportunities to provide feedback on Game and App Previews alongside System Update previews.

Next, we have an update to the Xbox Preview Dashboard that has been rebuilt from the ground-up based on fan feedback. A few highlights include:

A new name — the Xbox Insider Hub

Personalized to give you more relevant announcements, quests, and Insider content opportunities to get early access to select games and apps

A new UI, inspired by the New Xbox One Experience, makes it easier to find the right info and provide more robust feedback

The Xbox Insider profile card where your contributions in the program come front and center

Support for multiple users on a console to participate and provide feedback

We’re starting to roll these changes out today to a small number of preview members who have provided the most feedback since the inception of the Xbox Preview Program. If you have your Xbox One console in Instant-on mode and you have the Xbox Preview Dashboard app installed, then you don’t have to do anything — the app will update automatically overnight. If you want to see the changes sooner, you can check for updates by going to My games and apps, and then looking at the updates section. Over the next few weeks, all existing Xbox Preview members will get access to the new Xbox Insider Hub.

Our final change, my personal favorite, is that the Xbox Insider Program will soon be open to all Xbox users. More fans will have the ability to provide feedback directly from their Xbox One consoles. The Xbox Insider Hub will provide great opportunities to try out games, apps, and other console experiences. Note that Xbox system updates will currently be limited to those already testing them (not open to new members), as we still have a huge number of volunteers already doing a great job testing and providing feedback. Meet the Xbox Insider Team as Avatars

Not only has the Xbox Insider Team helped share and gather feedback on the updated Xbox Avatar Editor and experience throughout 1810, but as individuals, we’ve been excited to create our own Avatars! Now that most of our community has had the chance to take the Xbox Avatar Editor for a spin, we wanted to unveil our own Avatars so you can get to know the team a bit better.

Get a glimpse of our personal style below and learn what some of the members of the team do to keep the lights on.

Alan, Software Developer – I work as a software developer on the Xbox Insider Hub app and services.

Anna, Software Developer – I help create and maintain the services that support the Xbox Insider Program.

Ashley, Xbox Program Manager – I work with game studios to get their awesome games in front of Xbox Insiders, so Insiders can provide feedback and studios can make those games even more epic before release!

Austin, Xbox Program Manager – I work on the Xbox OS side of the Insider program, monitoring feedback and troubleshooting issues with the Xbox One console releases.

Bradley, Xbox Insider Team Lead – I am a Program Manager responsible for Platform and Hardware Previews. Essentially, this means my team and I provide users with early access to system updates and features.

Chad, Software Developer – I’m one of the engineers working on the Xbox Insider Program. I help to build the experiences in the Xbox Insider Hub and the supporting services. If you ever get stuck in a ‘pending’ state while trying to join some insider content; that’s my fault. But we’re working on it.

David, Xbox Program Manager – I’m a gamer dad in my off hours and a PM on the Xbox Insider Team with a focus on content, community, and quality during the work day. I work alongside a team of awesome developers to build the Xbox Insider Hub, and in addition, I manage the r/XboxInsiders subreddit with a dedicated group of volunteers and community builders.

Don, Xbox Program Manager – I work with Game Studios to flight their titles through the Xbox Insider Program!

Donovan, Xbox Program Manager – I help identify bugs and trending issues provided by our Xbox Insiders to ensure top quality throughout the Xbox experience. I also assist with system updates and Windows gaming feedback.

John, Software Developer – Programmer man. Also responsible for feeding the hamsters that power our servers.

Jon, Xbox Program Manager – I help with Xbox One System Update Feedback and with Idea Drives found on the Xbox Ideas website.

Kendrick, Xbox Program Manager – I’m a Program Manager on the Xbox Insider Team and work on the “Report a problem” tool and future innovations to make the program even better.

Leland, Xbox Program Manager – I spend most of my time thinking up ways to get the things you tell us to the right people, faster. I’m also pretty handy with a color wheel.

Robert, Xbox Program Manager – I help organize game and app playtests and also assist with triaging bugs related to the Xbox Insider Hub, making sure that the app runs as expected.

Sally, Xbox Program Manager – I work on publishing tools to help improve upon the Xbox Insider experience.

Savannah, Xbox Program Manager – I work closely with Brad to ensure system updates and new features are available to our Xbox Insiders in a way that allows them provide feedback as early as possible. From there, I help communicate that feedback and more internally to our partners across Team Xbox and also externally via the Xbox Insider Blog.

Scott, Xbox Program Manager – Salutations! I’m Scott AKA BroHammersley. I’ve been a program manager on the Xbox Insider team for more than 4 years and had several jobs (providing support on the forums, triaging bugs, writing announcements and release notes, etc.). These days I mostly help publishers and developers bring their games and apps to the Xbox Insider Program, but I do a bit of everything. You’ll also sometimes find me posting in the Xbox Insider subreddit or Xbox Insider Club (as BroHammersley).

Todd, Director of Xbox Flighting – I get to work with an awesome group of people that are extremely customer and quality focused. We work across Team Xbox and our Game Studio partners to drive engineering actionable feedback into Xbox One, Games, and other Xbox experiences, like Xbox Avatars. Most of all, I am thankful for all of the great Xbox Insiders around the world that share our team’s passion for gaming and continuous improvement.
