Windows 10: You can now bring your own machine to Visual Studio Online

Today Visual Studio Online provides fully-managed, on-demand, ready-to-code development environments in the cloud, but did you know you can also register your own machines and access them remotely from Visual Studio Code or our web editor? This is a great option for developers that want to cloud-connect an already configured work or home machine for anywhere access, or take advantage of the Visual Studio Online developer experience for specialized hardware we donât currently support. Weâve made several improvements to streamline the self-hosted registration process and expand supported scenarios.

Register your machine with our CLI (Preview)

Previously, registering your machine required you to be able to launch and interact with Visual Studio Code. If you only had SSH access or didnât want to install and setup RDP, cloud-connecting your machine with Visual Studio Online was simply impossible. With the preview release of our CLI, weâve expanded our support to include server and headless OS scenarios across macOS, Linux, and Windows. To help get you started quickly, weâve published our CLI to Homebrew and APT, with chocolatey coming soon.

On Windows:
Install via Powershell by download and executing our script.

On macOS:
brew install microsoft/vsonline/vso

On Linux:
apt install vso

Once you have the CLI installed, run vso start to register your machine and select a plan created in your current region.

Updated Registration Experience in Visual Studio Code

For those of you who prefer using Visual Studio Code to connect your environment, we updated our extension to get you started with just one click! If you donât have any self-hosted machines, youâll now find a âRegister self-hosted environmentâ¦â command in the Visual Studio Online viewlet that will walk you through the steps required to register your environment. You can also still access the registration command via the command palette.

Supporting JUnit 5 in Visual Studio Code

After supporting the widely adopted JUnit 4 with the Java Test Runner extension for Visual Studio Code, we’ve received suggestions to add additional test frameworks, like JUnit 5 and TestNG. We’ve added initial support for JUnit 5, including running, debugging test cases as well as test report. Please give us a try and let us know your feedback.

Expression Evaluation based Conditional Break Point

After introducing expression evaluation in our January release for the Java debugger extension, we are bringing the functionality to conditional break points. Now, you can set your breakpoint to break when an expression evaluates to true. We believe this could be a very useful feature when debugging your Java application using Visual Studio Code.

Other Updates

We’ve also added new features to our Java on Visual Studio Code extension lineup, including:

Java Test Runner

Trigger tests from test explorer on different levels

Add command to open log file

Add setting to specify the position of test report

Tomcat

Add several context commands in Tomcat Explorer

Add support for JVM customization and Tomcat server configuration

Add command palette entries for user input

Maven

Add support for auto-update maven project explorer when pom.xml is updated

Visual Studio Roadmap Updates and Visual Studio 2019 Information

Yesterday, we covered What’s next for Visual Studio for Mac, and today we’ve updated our Visual Studio Roadmap so you can see the latest news about what we’re working on. We’re particularly excited to share this update since it includes information about the first preview of Visual Studio 2019, which we will make available by the end of this calendar year. We plan to have a generally available (GA) version of Visual Studio 2019 in the first half of 2019.

Be sure to check out the full roadmap for all the updates, but some notable improvements are:

A better performing and more reliable debugger, moving to an out-of-process 64-bit process.

Improved search accuracy for menus, commands, options, and installable components.

Visual Studio tooling for Windows Forms and WPF development on .NET Core 3.

Visual Studio (.NET Framework)

Do you still have the Visual Studio Installer or Visual Studio Manager still installed?

If you have it still installed and it opens up correctly, you could try removing all additional packages that are installed, and try reinstalling them again. It could have been a corruption issue relating to package extensions that you may have installed
into Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition. If that does not work, go to apps in settings, and select Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition and select repair. If that does not work, you could try going to TechNet, and asking there for help. It could be a
bug with the current version of the .NET Framework 48 or with the recent version of Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition.

If you can not find Visual Studio Installer or Visual Studio Manager, unfortunately in this situation the only thing I can think of is if you still have the installation file that you downloaded from the Visual Studio website. If you can't find that, then
I suggest that you download Visual Studio 2019 Community Edition, since the 2017 Community edition is not given for free anymore unless you have some sort of subscription. However, I suggest that you still check with TechNet before taking this step.
