You do not have permission to access \\XPS Contact... Why not?

    Hi everyone,
    Specs;
    DELL XPS 15 9560
    W 10 Pro 64 bit version 10.0.183
    4core i7 7700HQ 2.80 GHz
    Bios version 3.0
    16GB RAM
"You do not have permission to access \\XPS
Contact your network Administrator to request access". I have been trying to solve this for a very long time, it seems that it is a common problem yet I cannot get it fixed.

I had thought this ( No permssion to access from one computer to the other
)was going to work but it seemed to evolve into a problem of not seeing the computers in file explorer also some directions did not work on my computer.

    In a nutshell I have (2 x) W 10 laptops and (1x) W 7 PC over a private network WORKGROUP named the same. W 7 PC denied access to both W 10 laptops, one W 10 (DELL) can access PC but not the other W 10 (XPS), 2nd W 10 laptop (XPS) can read and edit both W 7 and W 10.
I am foggy on details because of the duration (it has been ongoing) and the number of edits to settings but it has in the past under varying circumstances worked. I have made and deleted user accounts, changed account types, created and deleted passwords.

The present state is as follows
Sharing options
Private: Turn on network discovery & Turn on file and print sharing are selected, Turn on automatic set up of network connected devices is checked.
Guest or Public: same as above
All Networks: Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders, Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryption &Turn off password protected sharing are selected.
Media streaming options are: Allowed access using default settings, both computers and many unknowns are listed
I have shared the folders and in some cases at multiple levels (that is Documents and Users folders and the C: drive it's self) to everyone with access to the network.

The DELL W 10 with COMPAQ access only has a password the others
do not. The XPS W 10 with access to both gets into the DELL with no problem. (Password protected sharing is off)
    Actions taken:
I have just turned off network discovery, renamed the network and restarted al 3 computers and got the same results.

    I have verified from

[SOLVED] - Network Error: Windows cannot access \\pc-name (network sharing) | Tom's Hardware Forum
    1. DHCP Client
    2. DNS Client
    3. Network Connections
    4. Network Location Awareness
    5. Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    6. Server
    7. TCP/IP Netbios helper
    8. Workstation
    9. Function Discovery Resource Publication,
    10. UPnP Device Host services

"All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic."
They were, then from the tenforums post linked at the beginning of this post I changed
    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication
to Automatic Delayed start, again no effect.

I also made a rule in the incoming firewall for a range of IP addresses.

I have forgotten some I'm sure, any further suggestions?

    Is there anyone willing?

    Thanks
    Chris

    :)

  2. xp ntfs permissions erased - help!

NEVER, ever, remove FULL CONTROL permissions in the Access Control Lists/rights priveleges from:

    • Administators Group
    • YOUR local Administrator User
    • SYSTEM
on NTFS rights on your disks (via Explorer.exe rightclick properties menu, security tab) that use that filesystem, OR in the REGISTRY either, via rightclick on HIVES/KEYS permissions popup menu options...

(Sure way to lock yourself out, period, & I have done it myself early on w/ NTFS filesystems &/or the Registry before... only way to learn sometimes, is making mistakes!)

    * Keep this in mind, those of you that start experimenting w/ security @ these 2 levels!

    APK

P.S.=> Leaving them @ FULL POWER, in both areas, usually 9/10 times allows you to get back into your rig (logging on as your LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR USER, to fix it), & make alterations to rights/acl's as needed, to "get it right", eventually... especially when you're still learning/experimenting! apk

    Deleting contacts from Windows 10

When you say Windows Mail Live are you referring to Mail app or Windows Live Mail?

I suggest you to try the steps provided below and check if it helps.

    • Open Windows Live Mail.
    • Press Ctrl + 3 using your keyboard. Right-click on the contact to delete it if it is a single contact.
    • Highlight all contacts by pressing Ctrl + A.
    • Click Delete located on the Ribbon bar.
    • Click OK when you see the message These contacts will also be deleted from Hotmail, Messenger, and other Windows Live services.

After following the steps above, all your contacts that you have manually added to your account will be deleted however, contacts coming from third-party sites such as Facebook will not be deleted unless you remove Facebook from your account.

    For Mail app:

Open People app then delete the contact.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.
