Windows 10: "You don't currently have permission to access this folder"

I almost had a breakdown trying to figure out why I couldn't have access to my files on my external HDD (WD Elements).

I still don't know what was the reason for losing access but I figured out how to gain it back, kinda.I had to change the owner of the Drive to the 'Administrators' group to gain back access.

I suspect it was a program or something I installed and not a virus. I recently installed MEGAsync, Bitdefender Free.
Edit: I forgot to mention that yesterday I upgraded to the 20H2 after a long time because it said the 1909 version will not be supported soon. I don't know if this could have an effect on this but the System isn't even installed on this harddrive.

But this message still shows up when I open a folder:

Why is this pop up necessary?

After opening up a folder once, this message doesn't show up again but I have 92 folders with subfolders in them, I wouldn't like to click Continue 100+ times.



Before I press continue on a folder, and try to see its properties, this is what I get.

Once I click 'Advanced'. Should I enable inheritance? Maybe for the whole drive?

This is where I changed (on the whole Drive) the owner to the Administrators group and gained back access.

But this I really don't get:

• When I see a guide either on the Microsoft forums or anywhere else and they say "choose the user that you want to give access to", HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO KNOW WHICH ONE TO PICK?I mean what's the diff between AN Admin and the Admins group?
• What's the point in having all these objects and groups and showing them to me to pick an owner, when I choose one it doesn't work.

Why tf do I have my user in all these groups?

I choose the other ones (like 'Administrator') but they didn't do anything.

I should know this btw. I had a class in uni where we learned Windows Server 2012, and I still don't know wtf is going on...

It's so messy and bad.

Sorry for the rant. I had to get this off my chest.

I would like to know how this works because I really want to avoid this happening again.

Tried your suggestion but the Controlled folder access toggle switch is greyed out. Thanks for your response.

This problem results when an administrator, the owner of the file or folder, or a user with the Change Permissions permission for a file or Full Control permission for a folder, changes the access control list (ACL) on the file or folder. Some of the
changes that could deny a user access to a file or folder they should be able to access include:

• The user or group was unintentionally removed from Group or User names on the file's or folder's Security tab.





• An explicit Deny has mistakenly been applied to the user or group.





• A conflict between share permissions and NTFS permissions was created when someone changes permissions without examining both types of permissions.



Method 1:

Let’s give permission to the folder and check if that helps. Follow these steps to give permissions to the drive.

a) Right-click on the folder which you’re unable to access and select Properties.

b) Click on ‘Security’ tab and under ‘Group or user names’ click on ‘Edit’.

c) Click on ‘Add’ and type ‘everyone’.

d) Click on ‘Check names’ and then click ‘OK’.

e) Select ‘everyone’ and under ‘Allow’ select
‘Full control’ and click on ‘Apply’ and Click ‘Ok’.





Method 2:

I would suggest you to try the steps in the article and check if it helps.

You don't have permissions to save in this folder

Which folder are you trying to save to?

If you aren't using the true administrator there will be certainly places you can't save to, or even access unless you manually change the security permissions to allow yourself access.
