Last night I was watching a Twitch stream by someone who purposely calls Tech Support scammers to both expose their practices and waste their time.

During this stream, the streamer and everyone watching was in shock as a scammer used a legitimate Microsoft support web site to "reassure" the caller that their intent to connect to the streamer's (honeypot) computer was legitimate.

The scammer directed the streamer (who is doing this for awareness) to go to this web site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help

This is a legitimate site. Someone who understands basics about TLS and trust would know this is a legitimate Microsoft web site.

The scammer then provided the 6 digit code for LogMeIn Rescue and the streamer was directed to enter their 6 digit code into the form on the site.

At that point LogMeIn Rescue activated and the scammer connected to the honeypot computer.

Unfortunately, this will look ENTIRELY LEGITIMATE to many victims. We were shocked that this was possible and that it puts Microsoft in an extremely bad light (despite all of the warnings and legalese on the web page at the bottom).

You may watch the video from the stream here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/326575556##

You will want to skip to the 3 hour 40 minute mark.

This is very distressing. While I do not believe Microsoft participates in scams, this site is being used to LEGITIMIZE a scammer's claims to victimize others.

    Thank you for your time,

    Chris Gomez

"logmeinrescue" is it a legitimate micorsoft technical support site.

It's a legitimate third-party remote control program used by many IT companies. Having said that, it doesn't necessarily follow that it's being used legitimately.

If you used Remote support for something, you would have been asked for permission for it to be a) downloaded and b) run.

    Remote Assistance

    Hi Darlene,

We appreciate you for being a part of Windows 10.

Before proceeding, we need more information to help you better.

    • Are the computers connected to domain?

    • Which edition of Windows 10 is installed in your computer?
Reference: Meanwhile you may follow the suggestions in the below article and check if it helps. With Remote Desktop Connection, you can sit at a PC and connect to another PC in a different location (the remote
    PC).

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/remote-desktop-connection-faq#1TC=windows-8

Note: You may open the Start menu and click on search bar to access search bar. Except the search bar option, everything will work in Windows 10 as suggested in the above article. You may not access some of
the computers if they are connected to domain. If you can see the sign-in screen of the remote PC but you can't sign in, you might not have been added to the Remote Desktop Users Group or to any group with administrator rights on the remote
PC. Ask your system admin to do this for you.

If the computers are connected to domain, you may post your query in Microsoft TechNet forum. We have a dedicated team with advanced tools and permissions to help you with this type of issues. I suggest you to post the same
query in Microsoft TechNet forum for further assistance with this issue.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?category=Windows10ITPro

Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with the issue. We are glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
