Now. . .let see if I got this right. Over the past 30 years Microsoft Icons have been compared to Tonka toys, Toys R-Us, etc. If you have more that you remember please few free to add them to the list. . .*Roflmao2. I know there are more, but those who know me know I have a problem remembering even my own Name. . .*cry

  6. Just think you and I think the icons suck and they would better be better with 7 style icons. The guys that do the programming and graphics design and the tosser that came up with more of this new flat look are probably earning between $120K and $500K P.A.
as a minimum. They are going to launch Windows 10 that looks awful, has (insert deity here) awful icons and color schemes. So far no Windows 2000 type mode for lab machines. Yes there are Oscilloscopes that run Windows. Lab display for all manner of machines in laboratories world wide. I used to program TV Main board modules on a machine running NT4. No need for fancy graphics, just a clear and concise workstation. So far (at the time of writing) they Microsoft have not wooded me to upgrade to 10 when it comes out. It looks like it will need a lot of hacking to just kick it into shape and I for one can't be bothered any more. Will it be any faster than Windows 7?

There were many things people hated, including activation. But it was also universally panned as "ugly" and the "Fisher Price OS".

I get it ... the icons released are not well liked.

These are most likely NOT the icons that will ship with RTM Win10, at least I hope not. This is still very much a development release, not even a beta.

Anyway, quite your itchin' - there are plenty of icons that you can choose . That's one of the best things MS did with Windows - you can do things 100 different ways and you can customize just about anything if you know how. That too is one of the difficulties people have with Windows "How come there are some many ways to do the same thing?

Knowing how to do something is what makes Designer Media forums so great. The tutorials and the members are well versed in many aspects of Windows. Some members know hardware, some members know software, some members know internals, and some members know a bit about a lot. We lean on each other to find solutions to issues, or to create a more personalized Windows.

I joined Vistax64 when I needed some help solving an issue on an HP laptop - turns out, the Mobo was dying. I ditched that laptop and bought one with Win7, I came to SevenForums to learn how to use the new GUI (the OS hadn't changed all that much, but finding things was a learning curve for me). After I became more comfortable with Win7, I dove in and rewrote an existing tutorial that had grown long in the tooth (everything was in 1200 comments, but the tut didn't reflect those updates). I'd venture to say that most members joined for a similar reason and stayed because they want to help others solve issues on their computer. The only rewards we get are those pips and the satisfaction of helping another member solve the issue on their machine.

Anyway ... don't like the icons? Change them!

Google search results for Windows icons

but yeah, the current icons are as cartoonish as Microsoft Bob

*Ditto Excellent points. I put this out earlier when the "paper cup" recycle bin icon first reared it's head! Which I understand has been changed, to what I don't know. But here 'tis again, if you care to look and/or use.

Making a big deal about nothing?? I think so. Since there is a way to change the ICONS what's the big deal and I bet people who get or use a copy of Win10 will not likely care about what the ICONS look like.

  11. That's true and sad they pay that much for sloppy work like that *Confused
Win-7 on a ssd is much fast booting up and running in general than any of the builds so far even with 10tp on a ssd 7 is much faster,
Or at least that has been my observation
    Cheers.

I suppose they had to get rid of some eye candy because if all of the apps are active that would soak up allot of internet activity and resources.

  12. I do recall hearing (or reading about) people complaining about the appearance of XP.
I used to run the silver theme instead of the blue theme.

BTW, I find that the default icons in Linux Distros are unappealing too.

Back in 2011, I spent a couple of months transferring W7 icons into my Ubuntu 10 install.
When I swapped to Linux Mint, I transferred "my icons" into it.

Icons do not have to be "pretty", their job is to convey information about file/program/app and substitute written name. "Icon" is from classic Greek, meaning "image" Icon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia not even church icons are there to look nice but have strict styles and meanings.
For computers, "Ideogram" ( Ideogram - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) would be more precise word. Ideograms are very simple in design but can convey the message just fine.

IMHO functionality is all that counts. I read these comments about the W10 icons being clownish and unappealing and I just shake my head, because for the life of me, I can't understand what difference it makes. It would be kind of a fun fact to know just how many PC users actually care about the appearance of the OS, or whether functionality is what matters.
