Windows 10: Your version of windows 10 will reach end of service soon - why does it not update...

I'm on winver 1909 and have a Surface Book 2.

Recently I've been getting the Windows Update notification:

Your version of Windows 10 will reach end of service soon. Click to download a newer version of Windows 10 to stay supported.

Windows has in the past, always downloaded new updates automatically, only prompting me to restart when necessary. This is the first time I've seen this request to 'download' ie. opt-in to the new version (20H2) - well, technically, I have seen the Download option to get the feature releases early, but if you wait long enough Microsoft will eventually download it for you - this is the first time I've seen the 'will reach end of service soon' message.

I'm wary of downloading this yet as:

• Why isn't it downloading it automatically?
• In the past, the Surface Book 2 has had long standing bugs with feature updates, which caused Microsoft to not install the updates until WAY after pretty much everyone else had them. Is the reason it's not automatically downloading because there are still some bugs specific to Surface Books?

I'm a fairly conservative updater and am happy to lag behind if that means the early users find all the bugs

Does anyone have any insight as to why this is not downloading automatically?

Windows 10 version 1909 will reach end of service on May 11, 2021

Current status as of February 3, 2021
Windows 10, version 1909 is designated ready for broad deployment for all users via Windows Update. The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.


Reminder On May 11, 2021, the Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations editions of Windows 10 version 1909 and all editions of Windows Server, version 1909 will reach end of service.
