Windows 10: YouTube playback resolution limit - Workaround

For some time now due to the high bandwidth that is being used, [due to the numbers of homeworkers, because of Covid lockdowns], Youtube has set it's page to default to a low resolution to control bandwidth.

This resets the resolution used by the AUTO setting and started out at really low settings or 240 and 360 which made what I use youtube for, [ demos and tutorials ], impossible to read - it has now started to select 720 for some streams which is more acceptable.

If you find that the bandwidth is affecting the reading of the content, you can override this setting manually in the settings panel

However, if you want an automatic solution there are a number of extensions available for Chrome that will always set your playback to the highest available I use Auto HD/4k/8k for YouTube - YouTube Auto HD though there are a number of other options available on the extensions page [chrome://extensions/ ]

The resetting of the auto setting will hopefully disappear as the pandemic reduces it's grip but for those who prefer to stay in control the extensions are a good option

N8 low quality youtube playback

with dedicated video chip why nokia is limiting the youtube playback quality.i have tried all the hq settings.try youtube mobile website on some htc phone like hd2 it plays them at 640+ resolution.i hope there is a workaround for this .or may be nokia can
fix it to atleast play vga if not 720p when using wi-fi.thanks guys

• Confirm which build is currently installed on your device. To check, follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + R, then type in winver.
• Click OK.

• Are you getting any error messages when playing these videos?
• Were there any recent changes made prior to this issue?
• Does the issue with video playback only happen on YouTube?

Increasing resolution limit in Catalyst Drivers

If you follow my steps, you can configure the maximum resolution and refresh rate manually. If you monitor doesn't support a particular mode, it should make some indication that it doesn't (tel you the parameters are out of range, go into sleep mode, etc). This is simply a workaround.
