• When you say that "zip drive", are you referring to zip drive or zip file with pictures?
• When you say that "Was given one with 2000 pics of grandkids", what is the exact issue that you facing while opening the pictures in the zip drive?

The Zip drive is a medium-to-high-capacity (at the time of its release) removable floppy disk storage system.

.zip can't be set to File Explorer

I understand your concern, and we in Community will try to help you in the best possible way we can.

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

• 
  Type Default programs
  in the search bar and press enter
  
• 
  Click on choose default programs by file type
  
• 
  Select .zip
  and select File Explorer
