ZIP file opens with WinZIP and windows reacts

Every time I open a ZIP file - it opens with WinZIP - I get a number of these notification popups

    An app default was reset
An app caused a problem with the
default app settings for .htm files, so it
    was reset to Microsoft Edge.

It doesn't matter what is in the zip file.
All Chrome extensions are set to Chrome. When this happens one is taken back.
I have taken ownership of the edge file and set permissions for administrators to full.

At one time it did it for PDF files also.
Now it is only giving me one popup.
Must I uninstall this POS edge to get rid of this crap?

    :)

    Dave,

Thought I attached .jpg showing zip attempt......did not take!!

The result of a unzip via Winzip was......

"Cannot open file "PanoramicCityscapes.zip'. It does not appear to be a valid archive.

If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again.

Appears it's reacting to the file name change......what do you think?

I don't follow that at all - could be because you are answering a different question.

Every time I open a ZIP file - it opens with WinZIP - I get a number of these notification popups

It doesn't matter what is in the zip file.

    An app default was reset
An app caused a problem with the
default app settings for .htm files, so it
    was reset to Microsoft Edge.

can you see that I am opening a ZIP file with WINZIP and it is giving me a message about an HTM and/or a PDF file?
And yes it changes the HTM or PDF file association when it does that, but I did not try to open an HTM or PDF file.
So why does it even care?

    I'm directly answering your question.

You said this happens when you open a .zip file, so what happens when you restore the default Zip association?

It wouldn't hurt to also restore the default associations for .htm and .pdf as well.

I have WinZip 19 and notice there are some built-in viewers in it such as an image viewer that opens .png in its own viewer rather than the Windows viewer. Double-clicking a .txt file in the compressed archive does open it in Notepad. Is it possible there's a 2-prong issue with what WinZip does and the default Windows associations?

Brink's solution brings you back to square one, so you can get on with your computing life.

But if you're trying to understand what is going on, then that solution will only sweep the forensic evidence away.

    1) Does this happen with all .zip files? If a 'large' .txt file was compressed and reopened, will this happen?

    2) If another decompression software was used, will this happen? Is this unique to WinZip? Does Windows 10's own .zip extractor do this?

I had winzip 17. It happened with any zip file I opened.
personally, I am getting REAL tired of MS resetting my default apps, then having to go back and set them again.
what would be nice, instead of telling me how to go back to what MS wants, is to tell me how to keep MS from changing things.
DAMN IT, it is my computer and I want it to work for me and not MS.
I updated winzip to 19 and the problem went away.
I have had winzip 17 working with W10 now for 9 months and this trick only recently started, so I assume the same update that resets defaults broke it. I am guessing that the next update may break 19 also, and the reason it is currently working is because I just installed it over the w10 update. If I reinstall 17 I am guessing it will work till then also.

Hi, having older versions of Winzip installed resulting in the reversion of default associations has been noted in other threads here. It is one - but only one - of several possible causes of associations being changed to MS defaults.

This is one of the difficulties experienced by a good number with Win 10, unfortunately.

For example, some experienced this effect after one update a few weeks back; performing an in-place upgrade repair install can cause a couple of such changes in my experience.

are you saying that somehow other programs are causing the file associations to change???
like Winzip causing PDF and HTM assoc to change???

I am finding that hard to believe -- but it is still W10s problem.

That's what has been reported in at least two other threads. Strange, but apparently true. Not seen anything on how.

If the older version is installed and the user restarts, associations are set to default (at least that's what I recall).
There is one other program of which that has been found to be true.

I was having the same problem with file associations constantly changing (sometimes it seemed almost hourly).
Based on what other members were saying about WinZip I ran a few tests.
Sure enough, every time I opened a WinZip file it caused some file associations to change back to Microsofts defaults.
I was using WinZip v16.5 at the time.
I upgraded to WinZip 20 and have never had a problem with changing file associations since that day.

Windows 10 - An app default was reset (older WinZip versions) [Winzip support KB article 401]

I wish many of those Winzip users have looked at that Winzip KB support article before upgrading to Windows 10. It turned out to be a compatibility problem between old versions of Winzip & Win10.

Nevertheless, upgrading to either Winzip v19.5 or v20 solved the problem as I too encountered problems using Winzip 16.5 under Windows 10.
