Warren Buffet says buy names you know.

As a decision maker, for a multimillion dollar budget and a few hundred employees, I know that 25 years ago me made technology purchasing decisions because of what the users, and ourselves, were familiar with in our lives. We used Windows at home. We had "iPAQ" handhelds. We had Windows Mobile 6 on our phones. We used office at home. We only knew Internet Explorer.

We bought Microsoft Office for everyone. We went with Windows for Workgroups instead of Novell. We bough Microsoft keyboards and mice. We used Windows and Microsoft products because the users knew them in their lives. There was always that one odd ball who used a Mac at home and wanted one at the office or thought we should go with Apple computers instead of PC's preloaded with Windows 3.11, NT, or 2000.

Personal experience drove business choices, and then likewise, drove subsequent and additional personal purchases. I wanted my email to all look the same, work the same, and integrate. I bought Microsoft's music, movies, and programs. I bought their games. I bought their devices, webcams, speakers, and exercise bands. I used their cloud storage and personal assistant.

But now that Microsoft abandons every consumer effort, even when they have the BEST product on the market, but do not MARKET/ADVERTISE them, so they desert it and point their loyal fans to other products. They slowly turns fans into users. And now, as they strip away one service or product after another, I ask myself, why did I just buy Surface Headphones with Cortana, if Cortana is just be a "skill" now for the other assistants. Why did I try to Microsoft my Android phone waiting for some mythical return of Windows Phone on Andromeda or the Surface Phone? Why have I build a library in Microsoft Movies and TV when I suspect they are slowly pointing me to "Movies Anywhere"?

But more importantly, why am I asking users at work to keep using Windows and Microsoft when now they all have Alexa at home, or Google, using Android phones, buying Chromebooks and using Chrome browser, and Chromecast? Dropbox and Google Drive and Google Docs are more at home now than Microsoft Office and OneDrive. I was considering moving our company to Office 365 and OneDrive and Azure, but why? I do not use them in my life much anymore and none of users do?

How does Microsoft not realize, they are where they are today because for where they were in the past; in my personal life and at my home. You lost a fan today...love that bottom line as long as you can.

When my employees and I no longer see or know the Microsoft and Windows products, besides some Corporate backbone system, then we won't "buy" it anymore.

    :)
