  1. phone scam or real?

I have gotten several calls over the past 2 mos. claiming to be with windows security and that my windows internet security has been turned off by a service not of the US, and I should make changes. if I have done so, to ignore this message. if I have not done so to call immediately at a certain number. which is different than the caller ID . I have not talked to anyone, nor have I called any of the nos. I am not computer savvy per say, but I would like to know what is going on? and now these people are sending messages that are overlapping one another. thanks any help.

    :)

    Phone scam

I now get no more weird foreign voices claiming to be from Microsoft's technical dept and many other such scams. We have been inundated with rubbish calls- before I added a call blocker device this reached 6 or 7 a day.

In the UK service providers have added a new free service that means callers are challenged to leave a short message, then press #. My phone then rings, and I have the option to add the caller to my approved list, accept this call but not add it, or simply not take the call.

I can manually add numbers to the blocked or approved list on line or using my phone.

The downside is any valid service (library reservations, some bank services) that rely on automated calls fail.

I have asked my service provider to consider adding a way to temporarily suspend the service.

Is this a Windows Phone scam or real?

    Scam.

These days it's wise to treat any unsolicited contact as a potential scam (until proven otherwise). Usually best to just ignore. If it's genuine and important they'll try and contact you again (and probably do so using other means).

Have you ever heard of google (or bing)? Always worth doing a quick search for the number first. Here's how to interpret the results:

    • If it comes up as what it claims to be, then it might be legit, but remain on your guard for the moment. It may be what they believe to be "legitimate" marketing rather than what it appears to be (to you or I). If you want to take it further (i.e.
you do have or had in the past dealings with this organisation) contact the organisation through one of it's published numbers (ideally taken out of a phone book or high profile advertising), NOT using the number that came up on your device, and ask them to
confirm that it's their number and why they would be contacting you. You could also try reporting the number to your phone company, but I suspect they may be somewhat non-committal. It may still be a useful thing to do, but more for their benefit (or for others)
      than yours.
    • If it comes up as unknown/unrecognised or is listed on sites which claim to log scam numbers then it almost certainly is a scammer.
