Windows 10: Black Screen of Death after restoring to Previous Version 1809>1803

I made the stupid mistake of believing Microsoft when they said they fixed the 1809 issues and now I'm in the situation I'm in now.


Upgrading to 1089 resulted in a machine that would BSOD 3/4 of the time during boot so I decided to go back to the previous version after spending over a week on trying to fix things.


Anyway after finally admitting defeat I decided use the restore to a previous version feature only now I'm on a black screen of death.


I did see about 15 minutes worth of 'restoring' messages so it did make some progress. There is a cursor and the hard drive light is flickering so we know it's doing something. It also turns the display off after 15 mins so that's working too.


I have tried logging in blind without success or any indication that that is where it's stuck.


So...

Is it still doing something or shall I wait? How long does a Windows version rollback take?


I have tried changing monitors but that didn't kick it into gear.

Sticking a recovery disk in did not give me the option to go into startup settings.

Sticking the 1809 media USB resulted in a message saying I was in the middle of an install or something and wouldn't let me go much further, at least not with any options that didn't worry me.


All my important data is backed up so that is not a worry but losing years and years of configuration tweaks, plugins , scripting and who knows what else a clean install is simply not an option. there's also a fair bit of legacy software on there that will be hard to source. There's also all my game files, mods and scripts too sooo I would really like to get this machine back up and running again.

Thank you for bringing up your query on Microsoft Community.

I realize this may be frustrating. Now that you have me with you, let me take care of this.

There can be many reasons for booting to a blank screen. These screens may appear with or without the mouse pointer. The main causes observed are:

• Problems with the driver for your display adapter;
• The video output is being sent to an unexpected port;
