Windows 10: Windows 10 1903 update missing desktop files

Hi, so i recently updated to windows 10 1903 after putting it off for a while and folders on my desktop arent there anymore and i cannot find them.

So, basically the update was going normally until it went into the sign in. It came up with " The user profile server failed the sign-in", so i tried logging in and the same error just came up again.

I decided to restart the PC to see if it fixed the issue and it ended up letting me sign in, except my desktop was different than it was before the update.

Many shortcuts were not there and my task bar was default with no programs on it other than edge. My documents, music and pictures folders were all empty. I saw that my old files from my desktop were still there but were not in their original position, so i moved them back to where they used to be (these are the only files i moved).

I then wanted to see if restarting my computer would change it back to how it was before the update so i gave it a try and everything went back to normal, including my documents folder. Except for my folders which i had moved on my desktop which were now missing.

I have searched through the actual desktop folder to see if they are there, i have searched windows.old, i have searched both my c drive and d drive for keywords of missing file names and cannot find anything.


Does anybody know what could have happened to the files and if i am able to recover them? One of the files was a school project i have been working on for the past month and is due in the next week so im kind of stressed out haha.

• Did you do a clean installation of Windows or upgrade to Windows 10?

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if you can find your desktop files.

• Open This PC.
• Double click on C: drive.
• Open Users > double click on your user name.
• Open Desktop and check if you can find missing files.

windows 10 deleted my desktop files

Step 1 - I upgraded to Win 10 and lost all my files on Desktop.

Step 2 - Found the files in Network - USers- Desktop

copied all files again to desktop.

Step 3- Restarted my machine again and lost desktop files again.

Step 4 - As suggested did the following as listed below but dont find my files.

• Press “Windows + E”, open This PC/Computer
• Open Local Disc C, open Windows.old
• Click on Users, select your User name
• Go to desktop folder

Cant find my files. Why is Win 10 deleted files again and again from Desktop ?.

• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
