  1. Network Search: NO "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed" checkbox

I cannot search my NAS device with Windows 10. This is absolutely critical as I have a research database located on that device, as well as built-in redundancy. I have my old Windows 7 computer still in service JUST to search the network.

Every internal answer to "how to search network devices on Windows 10" that does not involve installing some random piece of other software or upgrading to Server 2016 says something along the lines of:

"Under properties on the share, check the box that says 'Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed.'"

Well, I have no such checkbox. It does not exist. There is merely white space where it should be. I have also searched and seen no other examples of this problem.

Again, this issue makes Windows 10 virtually unusable for my needs. (Lack of Windows Photo Gallery is another huge one, but I was able to find the workaround).

So, HOW do I search a NAS device (a Drobo) using Windows 10 when this checkbox isn't there?

    Thank you in advance.

    :)

  3. Search Content of MHT files

    Hi David,

Most probably, this is a problem with the search and indexing of your Windows 10 computer. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we would like to clarify the following:

    • Are you trying to search the content of MHT files using Cortana?
    • Have you tried searching it using the File Explorer?
    • Are you using a third-party app to search for the content of MHT files?

As an initial troubleshooting step, we suggest that you run the troubleshooter for search and indexing. To run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, follow these steps:

    • Click the Start button and select the Settings
      icon.
    • Choose Update & Security from the list.
    • Click Troubleshoot in the left pane of the window.
    • Under Find and fix other problems.
    • Select Search and Indexing and click Run the troubleshooter.

We'll keep an eye out for your response.

  4. Network Search: NO "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed" checkbox

Windows Search and - allow contents on this drive to be indexed

thanks for the quick reply. So if I unchecked the "allow contents on this drive to be indexed" does that mean windows search will not find something within the file if I have a folder on the C drive set to search in indexing options. For example, if I have a folder called c:\Mike and in that folder is a file called test.pdf and the word junk is in the file. If I go to windows explorer and search for "Junk" will it find that file in the results?
