Why and how did Microsoft break file sharing and remote access?

I have two computers. Both of them are running Windows 10.

I use the same Microsoft account "email@address" on both of them to log in.

    However ....

I cannot use remote desktop to connect from one to the other. I'm on Desktop trying to connect to Server, and I have used as the accountname:

    email@address

    microsoftaccount\email@address

    Server\email@address

email (the shortened version of email@address that both computers use for my home directory e.g. C:\Users\email\)

No matter which of these I try, it tells me the password is invalid. I'm deadly positive that it is not, because it's the same password that I just used to log in here to post this, and I've tried typing very slowly and carefully to ensure it's correct.

I CAN connect to Server with remote desktop if I use a local account, for example Server\administrator. So Remote Desktop itself is not the problem.

I get the same problem when trying to access a shared drive on Desktop from Server (yes, I know that's kind of backward, but there are some files on there that I need to be able to access on both machines and the same issue happens the other direction as well, so "just move them to Server instead" is not a solution). If I log into Server using remote desktop with the Server\administrator account, then try to open \\Desktop\shareddrive, I get prompted for credentials, and again any variation of my Microsoft account gives me the same "invalid password" message.

Why is this so stupidly hard? I wasn't a huge fan of homegroups, but at least they sort of worked. I really don't want to try to run an active directory domain server at home; that's massively overkill for what I need, which is just to use remote desktop and share a drive from one computer to another.

(note: my Microsoft account name is not actually "email@address", that's just an example.)

    :)

    iTwin - Remote File Access

    here is the site (iTwin.com)

basically it is 2 usb dongles, that when plugged into 2 different computers that both have access to the internet, it creates a link between the two, allowing file transfer over the internet, easily.

obviously dyndns, static ips, etc - there are ways to do this without the dongle. but for most end users those are complicated. I think this is a pretty nifty idea *Smile Why and how did Microsoft break file sharing and remote access? :)

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.
