Windows 10: Audio displays red "X" and error message "No Output Audio Device is installed"

My computer suddenly stopped playing audio over the course of one night. I had not downloaded anything new, nor uninstalled anything. No changes had been made to my computer which would cause this. The audio icon in the bottom right corner displays a red circle with a white "X" in the center, and when the cursor hovers over it it shows the message "No Output Audio Device is installed."


Clicking the icon launches the audio troubleshooter, which either cannot identify the issue or instructs to restart the PC so that the fix can be applied. After restarting, nothing has changed, and the process restarts.


I have tried using headphones, which also do not work, and connecting to a Bluetooth Speaker, which does allow for audio to be played. So, headphones and the computer's speakers do not work, but Bluetooth does work.


I have tried following the troubleshooter's instructions and restarting, updating my computer restarting, updating the audio drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers, restarting audio services, and completely reinstalling Windows 10 in case something got corrupted. I've gone through all of the steps listed on the page "Fix Sound Problems in Windows 10" and searched through other questions with no result.


As of posting, I have completely updated my PC and restarted it, and run the troubleshooter once again with no success to eliminate any easy fixes. Everything is up to date, and I have not installed any drivers or software to edit the audio of my computer which did not come with the PC at purchase. I'm at a loss.

Audio Output Device error message

I'm on Windows 8.1. Some drivers were updated when I logged on this evening. Now I'm getting a red cross on the sound icon bottom right of screen with the message "No Audio Output Device is installed". I need simple clear step by step instructions as to
how I fix this, please.

 

No Audio Output Device is installed


Hi,

Yesterday my sound was working fine, I walked away from my notebook for 15 minutes and came back and the sound icon had a red X against it. The error message when I hover over it is 'No Audio Output Device is installed'.

In Device Manager the error message for Realtek High Definition Audio is: This device cannot start. (Code 10), although there have been different error messages depending on where I am at with troubleshooting.

I have tried reinstalling RealTek drivers on the sound card, rolling back drivers, using sound troubleshooter, system restore etc with no luck.

I have also spoken to Windows support and they couldn't resolve the issue and suggested I contact the notebook manufacturer (ASUS). I tried doing this but ran into errors on their website.

Are there any further suggestions anyone could recommend that I try?

OS: Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Manufacturer/Model: ASUS X555LJ
Processor: i7-5500U
Ram: 8GB

No audio output device is installed

I have a Dell 2330 all in one and have lost the audio.

Speaker icon with red x and message "no audio output device installed"

Win 8.1 and upgraded to Win10. No change

Uninstalled Realtek high definition driver and reinstalled. Shows no disabled device and that the device is working correctly.

Added a new user account, no audio there either.

Services show realtek is running.

I am out of ideas, any help would be appreciated
