  1. Is it possible to change the scale of the volume slider in accordance with what source is...

I'm often listening on IEMs plugged into my Thinkpad through a Dragonfly Black D/A converter. The issue is that for the audio to be a reasonable volume, I have to have it on 2/100 in the Windows settings (4 is already too loud). Often I can then further adjust within programs like Spotify for a more precise volume. However I'd also like to be able to adjust the native volume of programs like Chrome, where for example Instagram videos are very loud.

So my question is if it's possible to change the scale within Windows so I could lower the overall volume of the Dragonfly output source by 90-95%, thereby I could use the Windows volume adjustment better and with more nuance than the current 0=mute, 2=reasonable, 4=too loud.

Additionally, is there a way to reprogram my volume keys to only adjust the volume by 1 rather than 2 as currently? I can adjust by 1 within the settings, but it would be preferable to be able to do this with the fn keys also.

Windows volume sliders move but no change in volume

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop running windows 10. If I change the windows volume sliders either for the application or the system, then No change in volume occurs , except for the mute when I go to zero volume. If I use the in application volume control for Netflix and spottify then I can control the volume. So can anyone suggest anything. In particular I want the dell laptop function keys for volume to work so if there is a way to get the dell laptop keys to control the settings of the application that may be ok.
I have updated every driver and bios update both from windows update and dell

Audio sources default / startup volume

The audio is integrated on my Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboard and is listed as Realtek ALC 892 8-channel high definition audio CODEC. The problem occurs randomly, but I think I sometimes see a correlation with opening a new browser tab. I run both Firefox and Chrome concurrently, and both are up-to-date. The last time it seemed to have occurred with opening a new tab in Firefox, but as I said, it often happens randomly. Event viewer is not logging any Firefox or Chrome errors.

From the crash information I posted above, it appears that it is a Windows fault rather than an application as suggested by the error fault information, which is why I'm looking for a possible work around. Event viewer show the earliest error occurred on 4/14/2017 and was uploaded via error reporting to Microsoft. I was hoping to find a way to keep the affected input channels from coming back on to the (loud!) speaker level I use for other other audio input sources. The volume mixer's channels come back on to the speaker level setting, not to the top end of the channel's volume slider. Not all slider volumes are affected when this happens. The line in channel always does it, but system sounds and email (Thunderbird) channels are usually not affected.

Changing volume using Windows 10 volume slider vs changing volume in media player

What are the differences in the quality of sound output when the volume is changed in the following environments:

    • Windows 10 volume slider in bottom-right corner
    • Media program such as VLC player when playing a music file
    • Media program such as Spotify when streaming music

Is there any difference between the 3, e.g., would turning down the volume using Windows 10 volume slider be any different from turning down the volume using the VLC inbuilt volume slider?
