Malicious Software Removal Tool wouldn't install in S mode

I bought a new HP laptop for my granddaughter for Christmas. It has Windows 10 Home. In getting it prepped for her use, I ran Windows Update and got Error 0x800711c7 - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool failed to install. I went through the usual steps trying to resolve this. I discovered that "Command Prompt" and "Command Prompt (Admin)" (and their Powershell counterpoints) were missing from the Win-X menu. So in the process of trying to restore them, I tried to run Regedit. It would not run because the computer was in S mode.

I had never heard of S mode before (although I'm familiar with safe mode). It turned out that the computer would only recognize software from Microsoft Store, and apparently Regedit doesn't fall into that category. So I had to find out how to turn S mode off in order to run Regedit to turn on Command Prompt (Admin) in the menu. At this point I learned that "S mode" is a one-way street; I can't turn it back on.

Once I got Regedit to start and got the Win-X menu fixed, It occurred to me that "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" is probably not recognized by Microsoft Store, either. So I went back to Windows Update and reran the update. This time the installation succeeded.

Obviously I don't want S mode for my Administrator identity, but I would like it for my granddaughter, at least to start. I'm assuming the one-way switched-off mode is computer-wide and not a per-identity thing. In which case, there's quite a bit of "not considering all rammifications" involved in this S mode.

    :)

    > where does MS hide their downloadable Malicious software removal tool on this site?

The Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is not "built into Windows 10".

"Microsoft generally delivers MSRT with Windows Update the second Tuesday of the month. The standalone version available on this* page is delivered at the same time.

  4. Malicious Software Removal Tool wouldn't install in S mode

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Malicious software removal tool runs once a month after it gets downloaded from Windows update. Though I am not sure, but I think it never appeared in the list of installed programs.
