Windows 10: dual monitors GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

I used 2 monitors with my w7 computer that had 2 dvi outputs fine. One is a basic asus 24" and the other a toshiba laptop with a second party dvi driver board. This video card has a hdmi, dvi and displayport connections. I had to buy a hdmi cable for the asus. But the old laptop screen keeps dropping out every 10 seconds or so, erratic. Why? I did try switching them from main to secondary, but didn't make any diff. When the secondary display drops out it interrupts the OS too. I should try just running the laptop screen by itself and see if it still does that, but it worked fine with the old nvidea dual dvi card. When I turn off the laptop screen everything is fine on the asus. Drivers are up to date. where do I start?

120 Frames per Second in Competitive Games
The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti outperforms prior-generation GPUs and excels in modern games with complex shaders. It is up to 1.5x faster(1) than the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and allows gamers to experience 120 frames per second at 1080p in popular online games such as Fortnite, PUBG and Apex Legends.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti features 1,536 CUDA® cores, 6GB of the new GDDR6 memory running at 12Gbps and a boost clock of almost 1.8 GHz, which can be easily overclocked for further performance.

NVIDIA today launched worldwide the GeForce GTX 1660, which joins the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti to supercharge the latest, most popular games.
