  1. Displays desktop, but none of the icons are "active"

Just installed the security update two days ago. Since then, my computer takesinordinately long to boot up. It used to be maybe 15 seconds, now it takes over two minutes.

Worse yet, two problems have developed:

1 the computer boots, my normal desktop is displayed, but none of the icons that have an underlying .exe will execute. I can click, but nothing happens. I cannot shut down the computer, I have to do it via the power button. BTW, I can access resident programs, such as Word, but nothing else.

2 if the computer boots, my wallpaper is displayed, but no other icons come up. None of the tray items, none of the file folders on my desktop.

What in the security update makes this crazy stuff happen?

    :)

  2. Remove Linux Desktop Icons

I am not sure whether this will work (Ubuntu does not have icons like that on the desktop by default), but I suggest opening the trash bin and sweeping the icons into the window showing the trash bin.

  3. Desktop Icons Won't Stay Put

    Hi Laurie,

As per the issue description I understand that you are facing issues with desktop icons.

I suggest you try the following step in order to arrange the icons.

    • Right click on the desktop.
    • Click on view
    • Check the option auto arrange icons.
Let us know if this helps.

    Thanks.

  4. Displays desktop, but none of the icons are "active"

Desktop icons scattering after connecting secondary display

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    1. Are you aware of any changes being made to the PC?
    2. Which version of Windows 10 you are using currently?
    3. Are you using a HDMI cable or a VGA cable to connect the display?
    4. How are you re-arranging the icons?
    5. Have you tried connecting the display first and then switching on the PC?

I suggest you to try the steps mentioned below and check if that helps.

    Method 1:

Try aligning the icons to grid.

    1. Right click on the desktop and click on View.
    2. Now click on auto arrange icons and click on
      align icons to grid.

    Method 2:

Try updating the display and monitor drivers. Refer the article

    .

    Hope it helps.
