Windows 10: Something weird happened to my laptop..

7 year old laptop. W10 Home v1803.

Now before you go,"Update your Windows, dumbass!", hear me out. Other than using MCT, v1809 was never pushed to me, which I'm guessing it's due to the problems during initial deployment. By the time v1903 was pushed to me, which was about a month before v1909 release date, my storage was full, and I'm lazy to make space. Plan to eventually do a wipe & clean installation or maybe even get my first SSD. But, ya know. Laziness. Anyways, that's not the main point for this post.

So, when I turned on my laptop today, during the logon screen, instead of the usual "Please wait", it shows "Preparing Windows". When I reach the desktop, only the programs that I had previously installed, appear on my originally full & messy desktop. Edge pops out, says something like "Welcome to the new version of Windows" or something similar, I can't remember right now. Another pop-out says sign in failed. (I don't even sign in any Microsoft account before this) I thought, okay, did it magically updated to v1909? Checked settings. Nope, still on v1803.

I checked around slightly, my Start taskbar returned to default. Hidden files & folders setting got disabled. Opening Desktop from the left bar in File Explorer shows only 3 programs, which isn't complete either. Opening Desktop from C:\Users\User\ shows all my original files, folders & programs. And, checking the account name in Start menu, it's the correct one...

Then, I restarted it, and everything went back to normal. Messy desktop, everything. Returned. What happened??

laptop doesnt boot automatically

This is what happened.

1. Did a repair install and later disabled hibertnate in CMD.
2. Enabled legacy option ROM in BIOS.
3. After a few times startup ( i used the system in such mode for 5 days), changed boot option back to default.
4. Vola!! It boots automatically to win10 without any keypress. Tested it with many starts to confirm the same.
5. Re-enabled hibernate option using CMD and later selected Fast Startup.
6. System booted normally, without the need for any keypress.

I do not know exactly whether such steps resolved the problem or what else happened, hence cannot suggest above steps.

Weird Noise after Anniversary Update

Hello John,

Let’s check what is causing that weird sound on your laptop.

Based on the link that you had provided, it seems that it’s either your CPU fan or Hard drive which is creating that sound.

If it’s the CPU fan, it might be an issue due to heavy processing, processor heating up or changes made during the update. If it’s your Hard drive, the issue might be with HDD performance. We suggest you to back up all your data to your external drive

Step 1: Check your Task Manager

Close all applications and check in task manager for any high usage of resources by any process.

• Press Ctrl + Shift+ Esc together to open task manager.
• Click on more details and check for any apps that is taking more resources.
• Take note of any Applications that are taking High CPU usages and try to disable it if it’s not that important.

Step 2: Start your computer in Safe Mode

Safe mode will start computer with basic drivers to check what might be causing the issue in normal functioning of computer. Check if the weird sounds are still happening.

Step 3: Run Hardware and Device troubleshooter

• Press Windows + W, and type troubleshooting.
• From the search list, click on troubleshooting.
• On the left pane click on view all to get the list.
• Click on hardware and devices troubleshooter.
• Follow the on screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting.

Hardware and device troubleshooter is an inbuilt troubleshooter that will find the issues with hardware devices and try to fix them automatically.
