Windows 10: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909 " The next Windows feature update is ready and...

Good Evening,


I got the above message " The next Windows feature update is ready and includes reliability, performance and security improvements. " ie for Version 1909….I'm currently running 1809 Home.


If I accept this update, download and install Do I loose any data files, do I loose any drivers ?


Is there any guidance on doing this ? Why I asked many years ago this was the method I obtained 1607 and it didn't work, Edge was slow, no Offline Defender so I had to uninstall.

What exactly are "Feature Updates"?

Are you talking about the updates to Windows 10 core? Feature Updates are a little more involved than that, as the last Feature Update that was released from Microsoft also changed the build # of the OS. It had a different Kernel version number than the previous Windows 10 build.

 

Windows Update Message - Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1909

Hello, I am currently running Windows 10, version 1809, OS build 17763.973.

As well as the last 4 or 5 monthly (Tuesday) updates, I have also been shown a message:

Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1909

The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements. When you are ready for the update, select "Download and Install now".

When I try to download, I get "Error encountered"

"We could not complete the installation because an update service was shutting down"

The exception to this was last night, when the download started, and the installation got to 86%, before, once again, getting the "Error encountered" message.

Two things: should I be able to upgrade from 1809 to 1909, and is this the way that 1909 will be rolled out to 'Home' users?

Do I have to go via Windows 10 1903 to get to 1909? If so, why am I being offered 1909, as detailed above?
