  1. Anyone's external drives refuse to stay asleep?

So ive burned days on this, i'm now feeling pretty defeated. I've basically reverted the hot mess i made trying to resolve it and gave up.

I have a few thousand dollars worth of hard drives. Half of them are external as my case was just only so big and wasnt feeling the nas solution for my use-case. As such the enclosures just arent ideal for spinning 24/7, that coupled with the heat and power... i'd prefer they spin down.

After about a month i checked the smart data, and the one that spun down the most, spun down 24 times. Many of these are drives that arent even accessed daily.

Due to our good ole coronavirus i have some freetime to start attacking this. (ive now fulfilled my quota so this is a last ditch)

I disabled windows defender. I have had background apps disabled since the beginning of time. I removed all network shares. I stopped the voidtools-everything service. They arent associated with windows search indexing. I found tsvncache crawling them via procmon so I changed the cache method for that to alleviate it. I tried a registry edit "LogControlEnable" which is supposed to disable all logging. I tried setting them between quick removal vs write caching.

I set the spindown time to 1m for my testing, and no matter what, within 10m or so theyre spinning right back up on their own.

I know this is pretty prevalent with windows 10 and between the aforementioned, and irst drivers insisting on soft-hanging the pc when drives spin up, its very close to pushing me to never letting them sleep.

Just curious for others that resolved the issue, what the solution turned out to be? What workaround you used? Perhaps what I can do to troubleshoot it more decisively? Ive spent a few days top to bottom and im spent.

Due in no small part to the fact im not a developer/programmer, and as such i dont know exactly what im looking for, much less how to decipher anything non-obvious in procmon (or even if a better tool exists for the job.)

    Sorry about the book!

  2. PC refusing to stay asleep

Hello, I have searched endlessly for a solution to this. I upgraded to Windows 10 (64) from Windows 7. A few driver issues but nothing serious, EXCEPT that when I put the computer to sleep at night, it is on in the morning every time. I have tried every
suggestion (disabling kbd command, disabling mouse command, etc). I have tried every cmd that has been posted (btw, none of them work), such as trying to discover the command that is waking the computer. Myself, as well as thousands of others (from the number
of posts) are having this problem. It means that not only does my computer wake, my backup hard drive wakes and runs all night. So now I am unplugging my ext drive, which is a ridiculous option. Does ANYONE have a solution. Come on, Microsoft, it's 2015!!
All we want is a switch that says, "No matter what, I WANT THIS SYSTEM TO STAY ASLEEP until I touch the power key or space bar, or whatever. PLEASE HELP!!

    Thx, P.

    Computer Won't Stay Asleep

    Hi,

Computer won't stay asleep due to countless culprits: an accidental swipe of the mouse, a scheduled system task, and any number of other weird settings that reside in Windows' power options. To fix the issue, you may disable the Ethernet adapter's so that system
may stay asleep. To do so, you may follow the steps below:

    1. Open the Windows Device Manager.

    2. Click the plus next to Network adapters, then find the Ethernet adapter for your system.

    3. Right-click the adapter name and choose Properties.

    4. Click the Power Management tab, then clear the checkbox next to Allow this device to wake the computer.

    5. Click OK, then restart the computer.

    Update us with the result.
