Windows Apps from store can't access certain files

I came across this issue in the windows photos app after copying my photos directory to a new location. The app says there are "no readable files" found in this location.

After a lot of debugging, I discovered that another app `123 Photo Viewer` has the exact same issue, but interestingly, it has a file explorer. So I go to my home folder in C:/Users/.. and find that it only shows a subset of the folders there. I can't seem to find any difference in permissions or properties of the files that do and don't show up here.

Going back to the Photos app, I added one of these subfolders that contained a couple images some assets from a project, and these don't show up either. Again it's "no readable files".

So.. first off, where do I find the logs for an app from the windows store.. Does windows even really do logging..?

And more importantly, what kind of distinction is windows making that's not allowing these files/folders to show up in whatever API these apps are using, and why isn't this information shown anywhere?

Just to be clear, I *can* open these files with the photo viewer by clicking them. They just never get added to my library when trying to import the folder. And again, the only difference is that I copy pasted the folder from one hard drive to another; the new folder has some sort of hidden attribute that appears to be present on other folders sporadically in my system.

    :)
