Windows 10: Windows 10 is starting to delete too many user profiles - sysadmins, how are you handling this?

At my workplace, I've been pitching Win10 Enterprise, only to fall on deaf ears. That is understandable, but I assume Enterprise is more stable than Win10 Pro.

We've had a lot of PCs wipe user profiles and it's getting incredibly old. We don't do roaming profiles. People in my dept have been telling people to back their files up to their network drives but users being users, it falls on deaf ears. At the end of the day, data is lost and I feel like we have a degree of responsibility to ensure that user files are there for them. Really, it's not their fault their files are gone. Windows shouldn't be doing that in the first place.

I've pitched us changing backup software for servers, and now we're consuming licenses for backing up workstations for more important users. Something that was never intended. This works, but it adds up in cost.

So I'm soliciting ideas on what sysadmins have done to mitigate this issue? It's really getting to a point where it's unmanageable.

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit. I was debating between posting here and r/sysadmin but I thought a Windows 10 subreddit may be more knowledgeable.

Strange Windows 10 User Account issue.

Well you can try something like this... Delprof2 – User Profile Deletion Tool
It is free to use, if you use for private use.

User Profiles not uploading at Start

Hi Ernie,

Your computer might have experience a fresh start when the upgrade occurred last December 16, 2017, and the user profiles on it got affected as well. However, let us not jump into any conclusions yet until we isolated your concern. Let's see if we'll be
able to recover the missing user profile using a command line in command prompt.

• Open CMD as Administrator.
• Enter this command "net localgroup “Administrators” [Computer Name][Missing User] /add".
• Once done, restart your computer.

You may also check if you'll see the missing user profile/s in Local User and Groups manager. Here are the steps on how to do so:

• Press the Windows + R on your keyboard, then type in lusrmgr.msc.
• Click on Users, then check if the missing user profile is on the right pane.

Let us know if the above steps worked.

 

Deleting Windows 10 user account/profile

Hello,

For us to better assist you, we'd like to know the following:

• Confirm which build is currently installed on your device. To check, follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + R, then type in winver.
• Click OK.

• Are you login to an Administrator account?

Meanwhile, we suggest that you disable the said user account via Command Prompt. Refer to the steps below:

1. Right-click on Start button, select
Command Prompt (Admin).

2. On the Command Prompt window, type in net user and press
Enter.

3. A list of user profiles on your computer will appear, if you see the user account you wish to disable then you can type:

net user ExampleUserName /active:no (note the space between the end of the user name and the /) and press
Enter.

Note: Make sure that you have other accounts available to your computer with Administrator rights before performing this method.
