Windows 10: Get Windows 10 S on an old 2-in-1 that originally came with Windows 10 Home

I have an old RCA Cambio W101 V2 2-in-1 that I bought long before Windows 10 S was released. I use it as a travel computer so I won't have to lug a bulky laptop whenever I go on trips. It came with Windows 10 Home pre-installed.


As much as I love this little PC, the biggest drawback is that the battery is woefully underpowered. Unplugged, it barely lasts over an hour before I have to search for a power outlet to plug it in, or use a mobile power bank to keep it running. Besides that, the machine struggles a bit when I have to switch between windows that I need to run during use.


I read that Windows 10 S is much more efficient than regular 10 Home, and it got me thinking that it might just be the OS that this little Cambio needs to get just a little more battery-mileage and "faster" performance. Since I only usually use the 2-in-1 for word processing, web browsing and Viber, I won't miss any third-party software that won't install on Windows 10 S.


So, my question is: is there a way I can get Windows 10 S on the Cambio W101S V2, even if it involves a clean reinstallation? I note again that the machine came with Windows 10 Home and there was no "switching out of S Mode" involved.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows 10 forced download

I actually had a client call yesterday with an email problem. when I tried walking him through some steps, he says "Yeah, I don't see that there, but I think it's because it's updated to windows 10. It did that a few weeks ago. I came back in on Monday, and it said Welcome to Windows 10"..... I think I'd throw the computer out the window.

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

• Launch the Store from your Start menu.
• Click the user icon next to the search box.
• Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
• Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
• When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
