    Hi,

    I'm at my absolute wits end with this laptop. It's an MSI GS60 with a 4th or 5th gen i7 processor. It's old, but I'm broke so I can't replace it.


    I started having random blue screens when I was working, which was an absolute nightmare. This was from WDF_VIOLATION which was fixed with a fresh install of Windows.


    Now, it has decided to black screen in the middle of working. For no reason. It signs on fine, and I can start doing work. But then the screen goes blank. It doesn't turn itself off, but nothing I can do can wake it. No mouse wiggles, no keyboard input, nothing. I have to hold the power button to force it off and then turn it on again, which is futile because it will do the same thing again in just a few seconds, a few minutes if I'm lucky.


    Since the fresh install of windows, I have only installed:

    - Firefox

    - chrome uninstalled after I realised that I downloaded it

    - waterfox uninstalled

    - avg free uninstalled because I thought it was the problem

    - office 365


    Please help, it's doing my head in and I can't find anyone with the same issue. TIA

    The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

    Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

    Re-installed Catalyst 8.35 drivers (from the original cd) - no luck. Still getting the random black screen.

    I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve this issue.

    I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

    Method 1: I suggest you to update the Display drivers and check if that helps. If that issue persist please uninstall and reinstall latest drivers available in manufacturer website.

    • Press “Windows + X” and select Device manger.
    • Select Display Adapter and expand the driver icon.
    • Right click on the driver icon and click on Update.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to update the driver.
