Windows 10: An exotic "Critical Process Died" issue

I have a paid up, registered copy of Windows 10 home installed on a PCI express drive that, until today, was working just fine.


I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the last time I used it and shut it down, both Windows and my eset security demanded I install their updates without offering any readily available alternative to doing so on shut down. I figured they would be fine. Evidently not, since today it failed to start properly giving the error in the subject. After going into auto repair and failing to resolve on its own, I chose to give it a try in safe mode.


Safe mode loaded at that time and I proceeded to go after my first suspect, the eset service, in msconfig. One restart later and I get the same error as before. Okay, next suspect. Trouble is, it now fails to even load in safe mode: it results in the same critical process died error as a normal boot.


I explore my other options. Uninstalling recent updates fails for both types of updates for an unspecified reason, and the restore point doesn't work because system protection is not enabled. To cut a long story short I eventually find the drive that the os came in and get WinRE working with a command prompt open.


I go down the list for how to use WinRE. I ID the boot drive with BCDEdit, CHKDSK appears to complete but ends with "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50." SFC /scannow gets through 100% of the verification phase but immediately afterwards returns "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." DISM is a wash with DISM /image:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth unable to do anything without the log file I guess and Rstrui.exe /offline:C:\windows=active gets a system restore window open that actually lets me use the restore point created from the Windows update, but the system restore goes through the process and fails saying "system restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore. 0x80070002"


Any ideas how I can get my computer booting again? I did a fresh install of windows on a second drive, so I should be able to explore the original system drive easier now. Worst case scenario, I can back up what I need, but I hope not to.

Critical Process Died on windows 10 setup

Ive just opened event viewer as you suggested but I cant seem to find any error that says "critical process died"



I have attached a screenshot of the event viewer. I have scrolled to the bottom to where it first booted up.

Ive downloaded the software you sent the link for but I'm not sure how to use it as nothing shows up when I load it.
