Windows 10: How do I stop Windows constantly using Edge to handle html files when I set another default...

I don't want Windows to constantly use Edge to handle html files even after I choose another default browser. I've tried at every hidden place Microsoft makes those arbitrary settings without even asking for my preference choice.


Lately Microsoft has pushed it's monopolistic anti-competitiveness to new extremes. It constantly messes with my settings and does whatever it wants. Today I found that my Powershell 7 pinned to my taskbar needed an update. But Microsoft already had messed with it making the icon disappear. When I looked at the properties and saw the target directory command, I copied it. Then I did the update and Microsoft has also changed the properties dialog to remove the option of being able to set a target directory or to start the program automatically in Administrator mode without having to do the right click oprion selection every time.


I'm finding oodles of other cram-it-down-your-throat intrusion changes many of which take away former user manageability. With the excuse that they're improving customer experience and security, they're creating the old "user shell" experience before Windows became a legitimate operating system. Now, they've decided to make a shell for the ultimate tech dummies and take away user control. The only option now left is to dig into the registry and make changes that of course Microsoft doesn't recommend or support.


Can they please stop this idiocy? I refuse to use Edge. I refuse to use Internet Explorer. I don't want them constantly cramming their bundled software. It's a shame. I yesterday watched a video of Microsoft's open source commitment to typescript. Amazing and mega Kudos for that. Now have that team's mentality permeate the rest of the company.

How do I change the default setting for .eml files?

Try rt clicking an eml file, Open With, and carefully follow through the several steps to assign your chosen program completely as default.

Set this program as default (but in your case for Mailbird). (Or the equivalent in Settings)

Note that eml files are not a default file type in Windows (i.e. not in the relevant Tutorial list here Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials ) i.e. teh file type has to be established by a program.

How do i transfer Edge Favourites into Internet Explorer?

Have you opened the html file [in Word, for example, or another word processor or, as I prefer to do with awkward files like this, Excel] and looked down to the last successful line to see what is on the next line causing the error?

• To get there quickly, search for the name of the last Favourite that did get imported correctly.
• If you find the right place but cannot see anything unusual compared to the adjoining lines then open the html file in Notepad and look in the same place using that instead [Notepad has a search function that will help you].

I do not use Edge but [speculation only] it might export Favourites that contain special characters in a strange way such as
'
being replaced by
'
that IE does not know how to handle correctly.
