    Read Only Folders by default following Windows 10 updates


    Re-opening a document in Word 2013 after 8/1/2020 Updates would be in Read Only mode. After trying all the suggestions presented to IanNicholson1 in April 2018 had failed to to solve the Read Only problem, I uninstalled Update KB4565503. Now, the Documents folder shows "Attributes: Read Only Only applies to files in folder". However, the files open in in writable mode and I can save them now.


    By uninstalling that update, have I opened my computer to issues that update was meant to solve. How can I know what an update is meant to do?

    Hello Karen,

    I performed a clean boot and then followed with the advised steps, but still had the same issue.

    I've rebooted and reperformed the advised steps but unfortunately the problem with folders defaulting to read only still remains.

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Hi Ian,



    To better assist you, we'd like to know if you are the only user on your computer. If so, you can follow the steps listed below:



    • Right-click on your C Drive, and choose Properties.
    • Go to Security tab.
    • Click Advanced, then Change Permissions.
    • Highlight the user, and click Edit.
    • Choose This folder, subfolders and files under Applies to.
    • Choose Full Control under Basic Permissions.
    • Hit OK.


    If there are other users on the computer, follow the steps below:



    • Go to C Drive.
    • Right-click your user name in Users folder, then click
      Properties      .
    • Go to Security tab.
    • Click Advanced, then click Continue.
    • Click Enable Inheritance.


    After performing the steps, please restart your computer.
