Windows 10: Device USBSTOR\...was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

Ongoing issue I have yet to be able to resolve as well as other users.


Ambiguous match on an older drive that worked a few months ago, I'm sure I've updated my pcs since then x2 2019 razers


Just trying to transfer the data on this drive to a newer one lol


Drive turns on, discs spin, lights come on. No power issue

Device shows in the drives menu in the taskbar

Shows up in device manager

I've checked my registry key, the value is 3

Unplugged all other potentially conflicting usb devices

My particular drive says the driver is up to date and I can't find evidence of a newer one so far, the most up to date one Windows says is up to date is from 2006

Tried all ports on both laptops not sure if its a firmware thing with the usb ports?

I have 2 USB drives.

For one drive, 'WD easystore 25FA USB Device Properties' _/Events\_ shows this:

What is meant by "migrated"?

What would cause an "ambiguous match"?

Is this anything to worry about?

There are numerous reports of this issue, going back some time, yet no resolution from Microsoft?

Device USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Chipsbnk&Prod_Flash_Disk&Rev_2.00\7&324a8563&0 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

The relate to my front facing USB 2 and 3 sockets, yes the ones that should be easy to get at and use. Has anybody yet discovered a permanent fix for this please?

I am trying to install an old hard drive into my Windows 10 system. After powering the drive on, it shows up in the Disk Drives portion of Device Manager but after opening the device properties window it has 0 capacity after populating the Volumes tab.
Under the Events tab. In the information section of the Events tab, is the following message:

Device USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Innostor&Prod_Ext._HDD&Rev_\20191210&0 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

I have tried updating the driver (best driver already installed result), disabling the device (no change) and uninstalling then reinstalling the device (no change).
