  1. Windows 10: Most Apps crashing

I have a Windows 10 system where most applications are crashing, 2-3 seconds after they launch. Launch window might come up, sometimes they will start to show data or whatever, but a bit after that, the window disappears mostly the hourglass never disappears while launching.

    What still runs:

    • Windows seems to restart, more or less normally some startup programs crash
    • Google Chrome Browser
    • Microsoft Office Word, Excel, etc.
    • Microsoft Store
    • Task Manager
    • Firefox

    What crashes:

    • Microsoft Edge
    • Visual Studio Code editor
    • Notepad++
    • Facebook Messenger
    • Beyond Compare
    • Brave
    • Amazon Music
    • Snipping Tool
    • Snip & Sketch
    • msconfig.exe
    • autoruns Sysinternals tool
    • Control Panel > Troubleshoot > System and Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update crashes
    • Settings > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, Windows Update crashes after a few seconds
    • Event Viewer
    • ...most everything else

For most of these, I see the application launch, it will start up or start coming up, sometimes get to a first screen, then a few seconds later, it crashes. As near as I can figure, this behavior started or was first noticed after a TurboTax 2020 update no errors indicated. I ran Windows Update subsequently, it completed, no problems indicated. Figuring something that took down so many apps so quickly my be security software related, I uninstalled Norton 360 Security, ran Microsoft Defender after updating to current, it indicated no problems, did short and full scans both.

I was able to get the system back to stability by running:

    • Control Panel > System and Security > Security & Maintenance, Maintenance manual kicked off
    • This took a very, very long time, but eventually everything started to work again

But then on the next Windows Update, the problems with most of the Apps crashing returned. I tried rerunning Maintenance, that kept running, but nothing seemed to get fixed.

I then tried running from an Admin Command prompt:

    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth [no problems indicated]
    • sfc /scannow [indicated it had corrected problem]

But nothing much changes, even after reboots. A few things work fine, most everything else crashes.

When I run Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance Maintenance > Report Problems, View Reliability History Reliability Monitor, that shows a bunch of critical events red X, various things noted as "Stopped Working", so that is probably the various apps crashing. There seems to be no pattern to these, other than it shows:

    • Problem Event Name: MoAppCrash or APPCRASH
    • Application Name: {various}
    • Fault Module Name: {various .dlls}
    • OS Version: 10.0.19042.2.0.0.256.48

and yes, I find it a bit odd that an event viewer crashes, but I can view events under reliability history, but that is kind of how it is with this desktop, some stuff runs, but a lot does not

Seems likely this is somehow related to an update, either of Windows itself, or maybe one of the related .dlls perhaps brought in under the TurboTax update?, but that is just a guess. Odd how some things run fine, others not at all.

    So three questions:

    1. What is the name of the Automatic Maintenance executable I want to watch it in Task Manager, to make sure it is not crashing off
    2. Anyone else seen this sort of behavior start recently?
    3. Any other suggestions on how to recover short of a rebuild?

    :)

    all games crash!

    I suggest you run rthdribl > http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/archives/rthdribl_1_2.zip
Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
    What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
