  2. Remove Grand Unified Boot Loader (GRUB) from Windows 10

I had that issue when Grub was deposited on my SSD when I had installed a Linux distro to a USB using Live Linux.

I followed the above and it didn't work, so despite installing windows again, the following below worked for me (Dell Inspiron 3148 notebook). Differences in latest version of Windows 10: CommandPrompt (Admin) is now PowerShell (Admin), and I found I had
to omit the /S when I removed the ubuntu boot directory, so I typed rmdir ubuntu It is copied and pasted from the Ask Ubuntu forum.

This answer is for those with UEFI who have deleted the Ubuntu partitions before removing grub

You will be doing this from Windows 10. No bootable media required.

Where bootrec /fixmbr, bootsect /nt60 and the Ubuntu live with the boot-repair suggestions have failed, this has worked for me:

(This answer borrowed verbatim from here)

    • Run a cmd.exe process with administrator privileges
    • Run diskpart
    • Type: list disk then sel disk X where X is the drive your boot files reside on
    • Type list vol to see all partitions (volumes) on the disk
    • Select the EFI volume by typing: sel vol Y where Y is the SYSTEM volume (this is almost always the EFI partition)
    • For convenience, assign a drive letter by typing: assign letter=Z: where Z is a free (unused) drive letter
    • Type exit to leave disk part
    • While still in the cmd prompt, type: Z: and hit enter, where Z was the drive letter you just created.
    • Type dir to list directories on this mounted EFI partition
    • If you are in the right place, you should see a directory called EFI
    • Type cd EFI and then dir to list the child directories inside EFI
    • Type rmdir /S ubuntu to delete the ubuntu boot directory
Assuming you only ever had two operating systems (Win 10 & Ubuntu) you should now be able to boot directly to Windows without hitting the black grub screen.

  3. Efi partition between two partitions

    Hi,

I have an asus tuf fx55dt laptop with a 256gb ssd that has windows installed on it and a 1 tb hard drive as well.

I am going to list the series of events that took place :

    1) I installed ubuntu by creating a 300gb partition on my hdd.

    2) ubuntu was not booting up without my charger connected so i decided to remove it.

3)ubuntu was installed in a 292gb parttion and a 500 mb efi partiton was also made on my hdd.

    4) i deleted the ubuntu partition and an unallocated space of 292gb was made.

Then i tried to extend my 640gb partition in order to have my full hdd space back. But my 640gb partition did not extend to take up the 292gb unallocated space because the 500 mb efi partition is in between the two major partitions. Also my 640 gb partition
turned into a simple volume from a primary one.

So now i have a c drive(ssd) with my windows installed and having a seperate efi partition of its own and a d drive(hdd) that has no os on it but has a 500 mb efi partition in between my major partitions.

Also i think my booting still takes place through the d drive efi partiton becuase whenever i boot into my pc first grub shows up followed by the windows bootloader.

I need to get my hdd space back. Please help.

How to remove the partition created in EFI volume while removing Grub in windows 10

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME after creating new EFI System Partition

I would probably have booted to a Windows install or recovery media to create the

EFI system partition by using Diskpart and the create par efi command with any modifiers necessary to make it fit in the correct location.

I know Linux can use a Microsoft EFI partition but I do know if Windows can use a Linux version.

Yes, the bcd listing which shows the boot manager and OS loader.

It may have been easier to use a third party partition manager to change the size of the EFI partition.

If you might need it, here are the details of an EFI partition from Diskpart.

    Partition 2

    Type : c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b

    Hidden : Yes
