NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 announced

The latest advancements in AI for gaming are in the spotlight today at Gamescom, the world’s largest gaming conference, as NVIDIA introduced a host of technologies, starting with DLSS 3.5, the next step forward of its breakthrough AI neural rendering technology. DLSS 3.5, NVIDIA’s latest innovation in AI-powered graphics is an image quality upgrade incorporated into the fall’s hottest ray-traced titles, from Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty to Alan Wake 2 to Portal with RTX. But NVIDIA didn’t stop there. DLSS is coming to more AAA blockbusters; emotion is being added to AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs); Xbox Game Pass titles are coming to the GeForce NOW cloud-gaming service; and upgrades to GeForce NOW servers are underway. DLSS 3.5 Introduces Ray Reconstruction The biggest news? The introduction of Ray Reconstruction in DLSS 3.5, a groundbreaking feature that elevates ray-traced image quality for all GeForce RTX GPUs, outclassing traditional hand-tuned denoisers with an AI network trained by an NVIDIA supercomputer. The result improves lighting effects like reflections, global illumination, and shadows to create a more immersive, realistic gaming experience. Denoising is used in ray-traced computer graphics to fill in missing pixels to more efficiently composite a final image. NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 is trained on 5x more training data than DLSS 3, so it can recognize different ray-traced effects and make smarter decisions about when to use temporal and spatial data. DLSS, first released in February 2019, has gotten a number of major upgrades improving both image quality and performance. Ray Reconstruction is now included as part of DLSS 3.5, which offers a suite of AI rendering technologies powered by Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX GPUs for faster frame rates, better image quality, and great responsiveness. DLSS 3.5 includes Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing and Frame Generation. NVIDIA announced that upcoming blockbusters Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and Portal with RTX will use NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 this fall. DLSS 3.5 also improves image quality in real-time 3D creator applications and allows 3D creator professionals to showcase a higher-quality image without spending minutes or hours for the final render. Ray Reconstruction will be included in upcoming releases of D5 Render, Chaos Vantage and NVIDIA Omniverse, a development platform for connecting and building 3D tools and applications. DLSS is now featured in over 330 games and apps. And this fall’s biggest blockbusters will launch with DLSS 3, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, PAYDAY 3 and Fortnite.

Arm Is RTX ON - NVIDIA demos Real-Time Ray Tracing, DLSS

A pair of new demos running GeForce RTX technologies on the Arm platform unveiled by NVIDIA today show how advanced graphics can be extended to a broader, more power-efficient set of devices.

The two demos, shown at this week’s Game Developers Conference, included Wolfenstein: Youngblood from Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames, as well as The Bistro from the Open Research Content Archive running in real time on a MediaTek Arm platform with ray-traced graphics.

RTX has redefined the industry. We’re now investing in new platforms where we can deploy advanced graphics so gamers have more choice. The performance and energy efficiency of ARM CPUs with NVIDIA technologies can open an entirely new class of PCs.

“RTX is the most groundbreaking technology to come to PC gaming in the last two decades,” said PC Tseng, general manager of MediaTek’s Intelligent Multimedia Business Unit.“MediaTek and NVIDIA are laying the foundation for a new category of Arm-based high-performance PCs.”

RTX on Arm in Action

Showing the potential for NVIDIA RTX on Arm, developer Machine Games packed the Wolfenstein: Youngblood demo with beautiful, ray-traced reflections, all accelerated by NVIDIA DLSS, which uses GPU-accelerated deep-learning algorithms to boost frame rates.

NVIDIA also showed how RTX can enhance the The Bistro demo, which portrays a detailed, ray-traced urban scene in France, while running on an Arm-based system.

Both were demonstrated on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU paired with a MediaTek Kompanio 1200 Arm processor. Wolfenstein: Youngblood uses the idTech game engine made by id Software, while The Bistro uses NVIDIA’s sample framework.

The demos are made possible by NVIDIA extending support for its software development kits for implementing five key NVIDIA RTX technologies to Arm and Linux.

They include:

Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which uses AI to boost frame rates and generate beautiful, sharp images for games

RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI), which lets developers add dynamic lighting to their gaming environments

RTX Global Illumination (RTXGI), which helps recreate the way light bounces around in real-world environments

NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers (NRD), a denoising library that’s designed to work with low ray per pixel signals

RTX Memory Utility (RTXMU), which optimizes the way applications use graphics memory

The Potential for RTX on ARM

GeForce RTX technologies — including GPU-accelerated ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS and other AI-powered innovations — have made a significant impact on real-time graphics since their introduction in 2018.

The world’s leading publishers have used NVIDIA RTX technologies to set apart their top franchises. RTX technologies are now available in an all-star list of gaming franchises, including Battlefield, Call of Duty, Cyberpunk, DEATH STRANDING, Doom, Final Fantasy, Fortnite, LEGO, Minecraft, Quake, Rainbow Six, Red Dead Redemption, Rust, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs and Wolfenstein.

The news garnered widespread industry support.

“NVIDIA extending RTX support to Arm and Linux has the potential to benefit games and industries such as automotive, where leading manufacturers use Unreal Engine not only for design visualization but also for digital cockpits and infotainment” said Nick Penwarden, vice president of engineering, Epic Games. “We always welcome powerful features and SDKs that can be leveraged across many platforms.”

“Wolfenstein: Youngblood is the first RTX PC game to be shown on an Arm-based system, a testament to the flexibility, power and optimized nature of the iD Tech engine,” said Machinegames CTO Jim Kjellin. “An iD Tech-based game running on an Arm CPU with ray tracing enabled is a significant step in a journey that will result in many more gaming platforms being available to all game developers.”

“RTX support for Arm and Linux opens up new opportunities for game developers to provide more immersive experiences on a wider variety of platforms,” said Mathieu Muller, senior technical product manager of high-end graphics at Unity. “With GeForce RTX’s cutting-edge graphics features, Unity developers targeting Arm platforms will have more tools in their toolbox to create with.”

NVIDIA announces DLSS 2.0 - A Big Leap in AI Rendering

From in-game physics to animation simulation to AI-assisted broadcasting, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing gaming.

DLSS 2.0, releasing this week in Control and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, represents another major advance for AI in gaming.

DLSS 2.0 — A Big Leap in AI Rendering

Powered by dedicated AI processors on GeForce RTX GPUs called Tensor Cores, DLSS 2.0 is an improved deep learning neural network that boosts frame rates while generating beautiful game images.

It gives gamers the performance headroom to maximize ray tracing settings and increase output resolutions.

DLSS 2.0 offers several key enhancements over the original version:

Superior Image Quality — DLSS 2.0 offers image quality comparable to native resolution while only having to render one quarter to one half of the pixels. It employs new temporal feedback techniques for sharper image details and improved stability from frame to frame.

Great Scaling Across All RTX GPUs and Resolutions — a new AI model more efficiently uses Tensor Cores to execute 2x faster than the original, improving frame rates and removing restrictions on supported GPUs, settings and resolutions.

One Network for All Games —The original DLSS required training the AI network for each new game. DLSS 2.0 trains using non-game-specific content, delivering a generalized network that works across games. This means faster game integrations, and ultimately more DLSS games.

Customizable Options — DLSS 2.0 offers users three image quality modes (Quality, Balanced and Performance) that control render resolution, with Performance mode now enabling up to a 4x super resolution. (i.e. 1080p → 4K). This means more user choice, and even bigger performance boosts.

In addition to Control and MechWarrior 5, DLSS 2.0 has delivered big performance boosts to Deliver Us The Moon and Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

DLSS 2.0 is now also available to Unreal Engine 4 developers through the DLSS Developer Program that will accelerate deployment in one of the world’s most popular game engines.

RTX Momentum Builds Across the Ecosystem

DLSS is one of several major graphics innovations, including ray tracing and variable rate shading, introduced in 2018 with the launch of our NVIDIA RTX GPUs.

Since then, more than 15 million NVIDIA RTX GPUs have been sold. More than 30 major games have been released or announced with ray tracing or NVIDIA DLSS powered by NVIDIA RTX. And ray tracing has been adopted by all major APIs and game engines.

That momentum continues with Microsoft’s announcement last week of DirectX 12 Ultimate, as well as NVIDIA RTX Global Illumination SDK, new tool support for the Vulkan graphics API, and new Photoshop texture tool plugins.

DirectX 12 Ultimate

Last week, Microsoft unveiled DirectX 12 Ultimate, the latest version of the widely used DirectX graphics standard.

DirectX 12 Ultimate codifies NVIDIA RTX’s innovative technologies, including ray tracing, variable rate shading, mesh shading, and texture space shading, as the standard for multi-platform, next-gen games.

Game developers can take full advantage of all these technologies knowing they’ll be compatible with PCs equipped with NVIDIA RTX GPUs and Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Series X console.

RTX Global Illumination SDK

The NVIDIA RTX Global Illumination SDK, released Monday, gives developers a scalable solution to implement beautiful, ray-traced indirect lighting in games while still achieving performance targets.

The RTX GI SDK is supported on any DirectX raytracing-enabled GPU. It’s an ideal starting point to bring the benefits of ray tracing to more games.

Vulkan Game Developers Get New Tools

NVIDIA also Monday added support for the Vulkan graphics API to two of its most popular game development tools.

Nsight Aftermath, which provides precise information on where GPU crashes occur and why, is now available for the first time for Vulkan.

NVIDIA will also provide Vulkan developers with GPU Trace, a low-level profiler in Nsight Graphics that provides hardware unit metrics and precise timing information.

NVIDIA Texture Tools Exporter

The NVIDIA Texture Tools Exporter allows users to create highly compressed texture files that stay small on disk and in memory.

It allows game and app developers to use higher quality textures in their applications, and provides users a smaller, faster, download size.

It’s available as a standalone tool or as an Adobe Photoshop plug-in for game developers and texture artists.

More Advancements for Gamers

Add it all up: DLSS 2.0, support for RTX technologies with DirectX 12 Ultimate, the introduction of the NVIDIA RTX Global Illumination SDK, support for the Vulkan graphics API in more NVIDIA developer tools, as well as more texture tools.
