Microsoft Rolls Out Windows Update to Reduce Forced Restarts and Extend Pause Limits

Microsoft is rolling out updates to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Experimental channels, with plans to make these changes more broadly available later. The updates aim to give users more control over when updates are installed and to reduce the number of restarts needed each month.

This update comes after Microsoft reviewed over 7,600 pieces of direct user feedback, gathered by Aria Hanson. The feedback revealed two main issues: updates disrupting users at inconvenient times and a lack of control over installation schedules.

Repeatable Pause Controls And Separated Restart Options

Windows Update now allows users to pause updates for up to 35 days through a flyout calendar interface that enables them to choose a specific end date. The pause can be extended multiple times without a fixed overall limit. The current system limits how long updates can be deferred before the option is disabled.

The Power menu now differentiates between regular power options and those related to updates. Restart and shut down options can be used without triggering a pending update installation. The options "Update and Restart" and "Update and Shut Down" will still appear when updates are ready, providing users with a clear choice rather than having updates automatically apply on shutdown.

Clearer Driver Updates and Fewer Monthly Restarts

Driver updates in Windows Update now show the device type directly in the update title, such as display, audio, or battery. Previously, multiple driver updates from the same manufacturer would appear under the same company name without indicating which hardware component each update affected.

Microsoft is reducing the number of restarts needed each month by combining driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly cumulative update. These updates will download in the background and wait for a planned installation and restart, which will coincide with the next Windows quality update or a manually approved update. Users who want to install specific updates earlier can still trigger individual downloads and installs manually.

The changes are currently available to Windows Insiders on the Dev and Experimental channels. Microsoft has not announced a timeline for when these updates will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users.

  2. extend pause of Window updates

I've read too much about Windows update 1904 and set a 'pause updates' until 7/22/2020.

    .

On the Advanced Options page it says; Temporarily pause updates from being installed on this device for up to 35 days. When you reach the pause limit, your device will need to get new updates before you can pause again.

    .

I want to extend this pause, but not sure how to do it.

  3. Windows 10 forced updates

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have better clarity on the issue, answer the below-listed questions and get back to us.

    1. Which Windows Update did you install recently?
    2. Are you currently facing any issues with your Wi-Fi drivers or your Audio Drivers?
    3. What is the version of your Windows 10 computer? (To check the version of your Windows 10, you can refer

See which version of Windows 10 you have
      ).
    4. Which security did Windows Update messed up (Ex: Windows Defender, any third-party antivirus, etc.)?

If you know the update which caused the issue, then you may refer to the section
How do I remove an installed update? from
    Windows Update: FAQ
    and uninstall the update.

If you are unable to connect to the internet or unable to listen audio due to a Driver Update, then you can roll back the drivers by following the below steps.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and the
    R
key from your keyboard and type Devmgmt.msc and hit
    Enter
    .

Step 2: in Device Manager, locate the device that you want to roll back the driver for.

Step 3: Right-click on the driver that you are rolling back > Click on
Properties > Click on the Driver tab > Click on
Roll Back Driver > Then, click on Yes.

Note: Restart your computer once after the roll back of the driver.

    Also, you can refer
    Pause Windows Updates
and you may want to schedule or pause a Windows update from being installed.

    Hope it helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed by clicking Yes or No.
