Microsoft Adds Option to Remap Windows 11 Copilot Key Back to Right Ctrl or Context Menu

Microsoft has confirmed that a Windows 11 update set to arrive later this year will give users the option to remap the dedicated Copilot key on supported devices back to either the Right Ctrl key or the Context menu key. This change addresses workflow issues that arose when Microsoft introduced the dedicated Copilot key on new PCs in 2024, replacing the traditional keys.

In a support document, Microsoft acknowledged the problem, noting that "customers who depend on the Right Ctrl key or Context menu key for keyboard shortcuts or assistive technologies, such as screen readers, faced challenges in their workflows when using these devices."

How Windows 11’s New Copilot Key Remapping Will Work

Once the update is released, users will be able to remap the Copilot key through Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Keyboard. The dropdown menu will allow users to select between Copilot, Right Ctrl, Context menu, or other supported options.

This new feature will work across all Windows 11 PCs equipped with a Copilot key, regardless of the manufacturer. Some PC makers already provide remapping options through their own software, but the upcoming change introduces native, OEM-independent control directly within Windows.

Existing Copilot Key Options and Why the New Update Matters for Accessibility

Microsoft previously introduced an option to remap the Copilot key to open Windows Search or another app installed on the system. However, currently, no third-party apps support launching via the Copilot key natively, which limits the usefulness of that feature for users who prefer not to launch Copilot directly.

Screen readers and other assistive technologies on Windows often use the Right Ctrl key for navigation and commands. Replacing that key with the dedicated Copilot key disrupted workflows for users relying on these tools. The upcoming update restores compatibility while still allowing users to use the Copilot key if they prefer.

Microsoft is making several changes to Windows 11 in response to user feedback. Recent updates include restoring a movable Taskbar, adding expanded pause controls for Windows Update, removing Copilot branding from Notepad, and canceling plans to integrate Copilot into Windows 11 Settings and File Explorer.

The company has not announced a specific release date for the Copilot key remapping update, only confirming that it will arrive later this year.

Windows 11 - Shift + F10 no longer displaying the context menu? Remap a key to display the context menu?

tl;dr: F10 key works, Shift key works, but pressing them together (Shift + F10) does nothing. Works fine in Safe Mode.

I've only been using Windows 11 for about a week on a new laptop.

I was enjoying the Shift + F10 keyboard shortcut, which mimics the mouse right-click action by displaying a context menu. I think some people call this the Apps Menu?

I even used PowerToys to remap one of my keys (right Ctrl key) to run the shortcut (Shift + F10).

But for some reason, Shift + F10 no longer does anything. But it does work in safe mode.

Other function keys work, such as if I press Shift + F3 it will turn the text into capitals.

F10 + Ctrl works (resizes the window in Word)

The Shfit key works on its own; the F10 key works on its own.

Any idea why Shift + F10 together don't do anything?

Is there another way I can remap my right Ctrl key to perform a mouse right-click or display the context menu?

Is there another keyboard shortcut that opens the right-click/context menu?

I've tried uninstalling PowerToys and the problem persists.

    Thanks

  3. how to add an option in windows 11 main context menu , not in ShowMoreOption submenu

    Hi indu,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

You can add apps to the context menu in Windows 11 by editing the registry or using third-party tools.

Here are some steps you can try:

If you don't want to use third-party software, you can add options by editing the registry. However, be careful when editing the registry as incorrect changes can cause system problems. Make sure to back up the registry before making any changes.

Here are the steps to add an option to the Windows 11 main context menu:

    1. Open the registry editor. You can do this by pressing the Win + R key combination to open the Run dialog, then type "regedit" and press Enter to open the registry editor.
    2. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell
    3. Right-click on the "shell" key, select "New" > "Key".
    4. Name the new key, which will be the name of the new option you're adding.
    5. Right-click on the new key, select "New" > "Key".
    6. Name the new subkey "command".
    7. Right-click on the "command" key, select "Modify".
    8. In the "Value data" field, enter the full path of the command you want to run. For example, if you want to run a program called "myprogram.exe", you can enter "C:\Program Files\MyProgram\myprogram.exe".
    9. Click "OK" to save the changes.
    10. Close the registry editor.
You should now see your new option in the Windows 11 main context menu.

To ensure that your new option appears in the main context menu instead of "Show More Options", try following these steps:

    1. Follow the above steps to create a new subkey and command value data in the registry.
    2. Right-click on the new key you created and select "New" > "Key".
    3. Name the new subkey "Position".
    4. Right-click on the "Position" key and select "Modify".
    5. In the "Value data" field, enter "Top", and then click "OK" to save the changes.
    6. Close the registry editor.
    7. Log out or restart your computer to apply the changes.
At this point, your new option should appear in the main context menu. If it still appears under "Show More Options", make sure the "Position" subkey is set to "Top".

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Microsoft Adds Option to Remap Windows 11 Copilot Key Back to Right Ctrl or Context Menu

    Feature suggestion: Add right-click menu

Suggestion: Please add a Windows 7 Jump-List and/or right-click menu to the GPU-Z icon in the Windows taskbar. Possible menus in it would be "Exit" and "About GPU-Z...".
Maybe also "Switch to tab 1/Switch to tab 2/Switch to videocard 1/Switch to videocard 2" too.
Examples of programs that have such menus are ICQ, Skype, AIM.

NOTE: It seems for a right-click menu, Windows 7 is not needed - it works on WinXP and Vista too.
But even a Windows 7 Jump-list may be good enough.
    What do you think?
