Microsoft Adds Option to Disable Bing Web Results in Windows 11 Local Search

Microsoft has previewed a Windows 11 update that will allow users to disable Bing web integration in the Start menu and Windows search. The change was demonstrated during a recent meetup with Windows Insiders.

The Settings app will include a new option to remove web (Bing) integration from search results, and there will be a separate setting in the Privacy and Security section to exclude Microsoft Store apps from appearing in search results.

Microsoft has not yet announced a specific timeline or which Insider build the update will arrive in.

What’s Changing in Windows 11 Search

The new options address a long-standing concern with Windows 11. Currently, the search experience combines local files with Bing web results and Microsoft Store listings, even when searching for content stored on the device itself.

The planned updates include a toggle to disable Bing web integration in Windows search and a separate toggle in Privacy and Security to exclude Microsoft Store app listings from search results.

Users have often resorted to editing the Windows Registry to disable Bing integration, but the new toggles offer a supported alternative to achieve the same result without manual registry adjustments.

Other Search and File Explorer Improvements

Microsoft announced at the same meetup that local search will become significantly faster, along with performance improvements in File Explorer. The company also mentioned that bulk delete operations have already seen a 30% boost in speed in internal Windows builds.

These search enhancements are expected to complement other recent updates to Windows 11. These include the Low Latency Profile CPU-boosting feature introduced in May, the movable Taskbar available in the Experimental channel, and the latest Windows Update pause extensions added to the Beta channel this week.

Windows K2, User Backlash, and Microsoft’s New Focus on Control

The changes reflect Microsoft's renewed focus on responding to feedback from Windows 11 users, as part of the broader Windows K2 initiative.

CEO Satya Nadella has admitted that Windows 11 has lost its way in some areas, with company executives indicating a desire to rebuild user trust after years of complaints about forced integrations, telemetry, and AI features.

The new search controls are expected to be included in a future Windows 11 Insider preview build before they become generally available. No specific date has been announced.

Bing Maps - not working (search), and Bing Search (local results)

    Hello

I have read similar problems with Bing where you need to get the phrasing correct in the Maps application for search results to show up, but I am not getting ANY results period in the map app, unless I type in an exact address. I also tried none local searches
(such as bestbuy dallas texas, or best buy dallas texas) to no avail. Bing search and everything else works but I cannot look things up, like if I type in Mcdonalds, instead of getting McDonalds results here in Edmonton, AB I get the town McDonald, BC. Wal
mart, etc nothing shows up. There are 4 offices in town at my work, on my Android type into maps and boom results, here I get no results found unless I type exact address. This is really odd.... Also no local search results in Bing Search(search button on
phone), I can type in Panago Pizza or just pizza in general and only comes up with tabs web and news, not local. My GPS works so i can't see it being a problem, and it shows up as Edmonton, AB in the bing search app as well (where it shows location). I live
in a city of 1 million so It's not an issue of no listings, an if i use bing on the computer the local search results show up fine. It's like a black hole in the phone, location is turned on, every setting I checked...
