Windows 10: Windows 11 Version 26H2 Ships as an Enablement Package With No New Features Over 25H2

Microsoft is gearing up to release Windows 11 version 26H2, the 2026 feature update, as an enablement package based on the same platform as version 25H2, according to Windows Central.

The update won't introduce new features at launch and is expected to install with a single restart on devices already running version 25H2 or 24H2. Older versions, including Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10, will require a full feature update instead.

Microsoft has not announced an exact release date for version 26H2, and the rollout is anticipated to follow the same gradual process used for version 25H2.

Windows 11 26H2 vs. 25H2: Same Features, Different Upgrade Paths


According to Windows Central, versions 25H2 and 26H2 are built on the same platform and share the same features. Version 26H2 uses build numbers in the 26300 series, while version 25H2 uses the 26200 series.

Despite the different build numbers, the cumulative updates for both versions usually share the same KB number because they are based on the same core code.

Microsoft is expected to continue providing support for both versions with the same features and improvements. The main purpose of version 26H2 at launch is to update the version number and extend the support lifecycle, rather than introducing new features.

The update process depends on the current Windows version. Devices running version 25H2 or 24H2 will receive version 26H2 as an enablement package through Windows Update.

An enablement package is a small update that activates features already present but dormant in the operating system. This process only requires a single restart.

Devices running version 23H2 or earlier will need a full feature update to upgrade to version 26H2. The same applies to Windows 10 devices. Systems compatible with Windows 10 will receive version 26H2 directly via Windows Update without needing to install previous feature updates first.

According to Windows Central, using the official ISO or other Microsoft installation media to upgrade will perform a full in-place upgrade even on devices running version 25H2 or 24H2. This process preserves files, apps, and settings but reinstalls the operating system and takes longer than using the enablement package.

26H2 Hardware Requirements and Staged Rollout


Version 26H2 does not bring any new hardware requirements. The minimum specs remain a 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, a DirectX 12 compatible GPU with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display larger than 9 inches. Devices currently running version 25H2 will be able to upgrade to version 26H2 without any hardware changes.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft is likely to use its Controlled Feature Rollout system to gradually expand availability over several weeks or months.

The update is expected to first appear as an optional install in the Windows Update settings, then become available automatically to supported devices as version 25H2 approaches its end of support.

If the update does not show up immediately on a device, it is typically due to staging in the rollout process rather than a compatibility issue.

Extending Support with 26H2 and How to Get Ready


Since version 26H2 doesn't include new features, the main reason to install it is to extend the device's support period. Support for version 25H2 will continue through October 2027, and version 26H2 is expected to add about a year to that, following Microsoft's typical support window of 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.

Version 24H2 will reach end-of-support on October 13, 2026, so devices still running that version should update to a supported release before then to keep getting security updates.

For users on version 25H2 or 24H2 who want the quickest upgrade path, it’s best to wait for the enablement package to become available via Windows Update rather than using an ISO file. Users on version 23H2 or Windows 10 should check compatibility before upgrading, as that will be a full feature update.

To prepare for the update, start by opening Settings, then go to System and select About to verify your current version and build number. When the update rollout begins in your region, open Settings, choose Windows Update, and check for updates.

It’s advisable to back up important files before starting any feature update, especially if upgrading from version 23H2 or Windows 10. Avoid using the Media Creation Tool or ISO files on devices running version 25H2 or 24H2 unless you plan a full reinstall, as these methods bypass the enablement package.

Microsoft has not announced the exact release date for version 26H2 or the update order for different hardware setups. Users on version 24H2 should plan to upgrade to a supported version before the October 13, 2026, support end date to avoid gaps in security updates.
