Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Memory Optimization for 8GB PCs Among Four New Focus Areas

Microsoft is working to reduce Windows 11's memory footprint to improve performance on PCs with 8GB of RAM. This is one of four focus areas outlined by Windows chief Pavan Davuluri for the remainder of 2026.

The other areas are onboarding and setup, family features, and voice input. This initiative builds on efforts launched in March to address key criticisms of Windows 11.

Microsoft has not detailed the technical approach for the memory optimization work.

Windows 11 Memory Optimization for 8GB PCs

Microsoft has confirmed plans to reduce Windows 11's memory footprint to provide a faster, more responsive experience on 8GB RAM devices.

Windows remains demanding on limited-memory systems, and despite improved hardware offerings from OEMs, the operating system has not yet been optimized for these configurations.

Microsoft has not detailed how it will implement these changes. The effort may involve moving more of the Windows UI to WinUI, which is lighter than WebView.

Davuluri outlined four areas Microsoft will work on between now and the end of the year.

Onboarding and setup will focus on a faster, more efficient out-of-box experience. Memory optimization aims to reduce the Windows memory footprint for devices with 8GB or more RAM.

Family will introduce faster setup and improved access to parental controls, including new Family Safety features. Voice will enhance the natural and fluid use of voice interaction across applications.

Take everything we've learned since March and keep listening and closing the loop on your feedback. The signal from you is clear: keep going. We intend to," Davuluri said.

The Other Windows 11 Focus Areas

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows out-of-box experience to provide a faster, more efficient setup process for new PCs. For Family, Microsoft will introduce new Family Safety features throughout the operating system, including improved parental control setup.

For Voice, Microsoft states that computing will become multi-modal, with voice serving as a primary input method alongside keyboard and mouse. The company aims to make voice input more natural and fluid across the operating system and applications.

Since March, Microsoft has prioritized addressing major issues in Windows 11, introducing features and changes to improve its reputation. The publication notes that Windows 11 has seen significant improvements since late last year, with further enhancements expected.

    What Remains Unconfirmed

Microsoft has not provided a timeline for the memory optimization or the other three focus areas, nor specified the extent of memory footprint reduction on 8GB devices.

The company has also not confirmed which UI components will transition to WinUI, as the technical approach remains undisclosed. Additional details are expected as work continues through the end of 2026.

Microsoft signals end of Paint program

Microsoft has confirmed that it will continue to offer its graphics program Paint.

In a recent update, it had listed Paint as a feature that would be either removed or no longer developed.

Paint, renowned for its simplicity, has been part of the Windows operating system since its launch in 1985.

Microsoft suggested it would not remain on Windows 10 by default but did say it would be available for free on the Windows Store.
