Windows 10: Netflix Enables 4K Streaming in Chrome on Windows 11 With Hardware and DRM Requirements

Netflix has quietly enabled 4K Ultra HD playback in Google Chrome on Windows 11, lifting the previous resolution cap that required users to use Microsoft Edge for native 4K, and The Mac Observer, as cited by Chrome Unboxed. The update was first identified in a user post on X.

Streaming 4K in Chrome requires a Netflix Premium plan and specific hardware, DRM, and operating system conditions. macOS users are still limited to 1080p in Chrome and must use Safari for 4K streaming.

If any hardware or DRM requirement is unmet, Netflix will automatically reduce the stream to 1080p.

What Netflix Requires for 4K in Chrome


Updating Chrome alone does not enable 4K playback. Netflix enforces strict Digital Rights Management and hardware security requirements before allowing Ultra HD streaming. A qualifying setup must meet all of the following criteria:

• A fully updated Windows 11 PC.
• Chrome version 117 or newer.
• An active Netflix Premium plan, the tier that includes 4K Ultra HD streaming.
• A supported GPU, such as an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, or an AMD Radeon RX 400-series or later, with a compatible Intel or AMD processor.
• Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions, which may need to be installed.
• A 4K display running at 60Hz. Any external monitor must support HDCP 2.2 copy protection over HDMI or DisplayPort.
• Netflix account playback settings set to Auto or High.

If any part of this setup is not functioning correctly, Netflix will revert to 1080p streaming.

While Windows users no longer need Edge for 4K streaming, macOS users are not included in this update. On Mac, Chrome remains limited to 1080p. Safari is still the only browser that supports Netflix 4K streaming on macOS.

How to Watch Netflix in 4K on Chrome


Windows 11 users who want to stream 4K in Chrome should verify each requirement, as any unmet condition will reduce the stream to 1080p:

1. Update Windows 11 fully and confirm Chrome is version 117 or newer.
2. Confirm the Netflix subscription is the Premium tier that includes 4K.
3. Verify that the GPU and processor meet the supported hardware list, and install Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions if required.
4. Connect a 4K 60Hz display, and ensure any external monitor supports HDCP 2.2 over HDMI or DisplayPort.
5. Set the Netflix account playback settings to Auto or High.

Chrome Unboxed reports that Netflix enabled this feature quietly, without a formal announcement, so availability may vary by account and setup. The feature is currently limited to Windows 11, with Chrome on macOS still capped at 1080p.

Netflix has not published official documentation or indicated if 4K Chrome playback will expand to macOS. Users should expect strict enforcement of the requirements until Netflix provides formal details.

Netflix - DRM - Massive streaming problems


In this build, all Streaming apps which are using the:

"Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE - mfpmp.exe"

are stuttering and freezing.
E.G. Netflix App, Edge streaming Netflix, etc.
But Netflix works ok with the Google Chrome Browser, which doesn't use "mfpmp.exe"
I couldn't try other DRM based streaming services, since I'm only subscribed to Netflix.
This is a DRM issue where "Media Foundation Protected Pipeline .EXE" is using up to 40% CPU compared to 3-4% in 14316.
Went back to 14316, which solved this problems.
Anyone else noticed that?

 

AMD's PlayReady 3.0 In Polaris, Vega GPUs, APUs to Enable 4K HDR Streaming on PC

In the wake of increased requirements when it comes to digital copy protection mechanisms in consumable media (be it in the streaming or disc-type), AMD is looking to allow users of its products to keep up with the increasing demands of content distributors. Besides hardware encode/decode capabilities, hardware DRM support such as HDCP 2.2 or Microsoft's PlayReady 3.0 has become a necessity for high-quality content viewing, and is required for Netflix 4K and HDR streaming on PCs.

AMD themselves have said that they plan on enabling these features for their products via a driver release, thus turning the most recent Ryzen + Vega APUs into even more desirable HTPC-environment solutions. In the Ryzen Desktop APU Reviewers' Guide, the company specifically said, "Please note that HDCP 1.4/2.2 are supported for the purposes of streaming 4K+HDR content. AMD intends to have a production PlayReady 3-capable graphics driver in early Q2". The company thus joins Intel and NVIDIA in developing solutions that allow users to take advantage of 4K and HDR content on their PC solution via, for example, Netflix. • Minimum internet connection speed of 25 Mbps
• 4K display with HDCP 2.2 capability

• HDCP 2.2 capable and 4K capable digital interface port on motherboard video-out or discrete GPU
• Supported discrete or integrated GPU (PlayReady 3.0, HDCP 2.2 output)

Netflix has Some Pretty Steep System Requirements for 4K on PC

So everyone wants to crash at your place to watch the latest shows on your 4K Ultra HD TV, you can even "chill" with that special someone, if you can take your eyes off 4K content; and it turns out you even spent $500 on buying a new 4K monitor for your PC, because you demand no less than 3840 x 2160 pixels in front of your face; and among the first things you do (besides heading over to Interfacelift for some great wallpapers), is Netflix. Only Netflix has other ideas.

Apparently, you need a 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processor (or possibly AMD's upcoming "ZEN" processor), Windows 10 operating system, and Microsoft Edge web-browser to get 4K to work right on your PC, according to a Tom's Hardware report. Two factors could be pushing these steep-requirements - HEVC CODEC hardware acceleration, and hardware-level DRM features being introduced with "Kaby Lake." HEVC could prove crucial for Netflix as streaming 4K in existing H.264 format could quadruple bandwidth consumption over Full HD. HEVC encoding lets Netflix minimize the bitrate greatly. For Netflix's DRM component to access the CPU's hardware DRM features, it needs Windows 10, older versions of Windows won't work. If these requirements aren't met, Netflix will simply play your content in Full HD. No soup for you.
