Windows 11 26H2 Ships as an Enablement Package With Movable Taskbar, Local Search, and...

Windows 11 version 26H2 is expected to arrive around October 2026 as a small enablement package. It uses the same Germanium platform as 24H2 and 25H2.

The update brings back a movable taskbar, adds more Start menu and search controls, deepens Copilot integration, and sets new cloud recovery defaults for managed PCs.

Since 26H2 is an enablement package, PCs already running 24H2 or 25H2 should upgrade in just a few minutes with a single reboot. Many features are already arriving through cumulative updates instead of waiting for the official 26H2 release.

The hardware floor does not change, and any PC that can run 24H2 or 25H2 can move to 26H2.

More Control Over the Taskbar, Start Menu, and Search

The taskbar is one of the most noticeable changes. With 26H2, users can move it to any edge of the screen—top, bottom, left, or right—and choose a smaller layout with reduced icon sizes.

This is not a new feature. The ability to move the taskbar was available in Windows 10 and earlier, but was removed when Windows 11 launched its redesigned shell in 2021.

Microsoft is also changing how the interface responds to the taskbar's position. For example, if the taskbar is at the top, the Start menu and search panel now open downward instead of upward.

The Start menu is getting more configuration options, such as size presets and toggles to show or hide the Pinned, Recent, and All apps sections. Microsoft is also adding a privacy setting to hide account details during screen sharing.

Search is being changed to work more like a local search tool instead of a web front end. The layout should be cleaner, and results will prioritize apps, settings, and local files over web and Microsoft Store results.

Microsoft is adding a switch to turn off web results entirely, so search can focus only on local content. For developers, admins, and power users who need predictable search, this local-only option is likely more important than any visual update. Microsoft is also testing Ask Copilot as an AI-powered alternative alongside traditional search.

Default Cloud Recovery for Managed PCs

The update expands cloud-assisted setup and recovery, but not for every device. Starting with 26H2, Windows settings backup and restore, previously called Windows Backup for Organizations, will be on by default instead of opt-in.

This change only applies to eligible Microsoft Entra devices, which are workplace-managed PCs, and only in regions outside the EU's Digital Markets Act.

On those systems, Windows will automatically save configuration settings and the Microsoft Store app list. This lets a device be restored to a familiar state after a reset, reimage, or hardware swap.

Restoring from a backup still requires a separate admin setup, so the change only affects what is backed up by default, not what is restored. Personal files are not included and are still handled through OneDrive folder backup.

This builds on Point-in-Time Restore and Cloud Rebuild, two recovery features Microsoft has already released through preview and cumulative updates. Point-in-Time Restore lets admins roll a system back to an earlier healthy snapshot.

With 26H2, it will be enabled by default on managed devices with enough system drive space. Cloud Rebuild can reinstall Windows and drivers directly from Windows Update, even if a PC will not boot.

Copilot, File Explorer, and Updated Security Tools

Copilot is becoming more integrated into daily Windows use. Microsoft plans to add Copilot to Search and File Explorer, including a dockable side panel in File Explorer. This moves Copilot beyond a separate sidebar app and into core tasks like finding files and navigating folders.

Some long-standing tools and protections are being updated. A new optional Run dialog is coming to modernize a utility many IT pros use often. There will be a toggle to switch back to the classic version.

Windows Security is adding Administrator Protection. This replaces the usual UAC prompt with Windows Hello authentication for elevated tasks, making administrator-level operations more secure.

Microsoft is delivering most of these smaller quality-of-life changes through cumulative updates across 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 rather than bundling everything into a single release.

    Support Timelines, Hardware, and Availability

On the lifecycle side, 26H2 mainly resets how long a Windows 11 install remains supported. Home and Pro editions get 24 months of support, and Enterprise and Education get 36 months, pushing support for new deployments out to roughly 2028 or 2029 depending on the edition.

The hardware floor does not chThe hardware requirements do not change. Any PC that can run Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 can upgrade to 26H2. The exception is Arm devices running Windows 11 26H1, a separate release codenamed Bromine for newer Arm chips like Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2.

These devices will not get the 26H2 update and are expected to move to version 27H2 in 2027. Rollout is planned for the second half of 2026, likely around October, following the pattern of recent Windows 11 releases that landed in late September or October. Many features are already reaching devices through cumulative updates ahead of the official release.

As an enablement package, 26H2 should install quickly on 24H2 and 25H2 systems, though the cloud recovery defaults apply only to eligible managed Entra devices outside the EU.

  3. Movable taskbar on Windows 11.

I agree fixing the taskbar to one location is a bad idea. It is a step backwards.

Looking at Windows 11 the word 'superficial' comes to mind. Too much spent

on look, feel sound. Not enough spent on functionality.

    Windows 11 Cortana/Taskbar search

Is there any way to change settings of Windows 10/11 when user search via taskbar/Cortana search and select Documents in option, that search result would include indexes result as well. Right now user can search for indexed folder via File Explorer, in taskbar search it would not find results and suggest to search (with link) in file explorer. Thank you for suggestions.
