Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Will Not Get Drag-to-Move Taskbar Support

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 will not let users drag the taskbar to move it to another edge of the screen, a behavior Windows 10 supported. Diego Baca, Vice President of Design at Microsoft, explained the decision in a post on X and described it as "a deliberate design decision, not a missing capability."

Windows 11 gained the ability to change the taskbar position earlier this year, but only through the Settings app. Baca's statement makes clear that Microsoft does not plan to add the drag gesture on top of that option.

Why Microsoft Kept Taskbar Positioning in Settings

Baca says Microsoft's research showed that dragging the taskbar to reposition it can lead to accidental movements. He points out that this risk is one of the reasons the "Lock the taskbar" option existed in earlier versions of Windows.

Microsoft also found that people rarely change the taskbar position. Most users pick a location once and leave it there, so the company decided that a setting reachable with a single right-click is the more predictable approach. Baca calls the result more intentional than a free drag gesture.

The workflow differs noticeably between the two versions:

    • Windows 10: right-click the taskbar, uncheck "Lock the taskbar", then drag the bar to the desired edge of the screen.
    • Windows 11: right-click the taskbar, open the taskbar options in Settings, then select the desired position from the list.

Resizing the taskbar by dragging its top edge, which Windows 10 also allowed, is not part of Windows 11 either. Microsoft's statement addresses only the drag-to-move behavior and does not mention resizing.

How to Change the Taskbar Position on Windows 11

Users who want to move the taskbar now have one route, the Settings app. The process takes a few clicks:

    1. Right-click an empty area of the Windows 11 taskbar.
    2. Open the taskbar settings from the context menu, which launches the Settings app.
    3. Pick the new taskbar position from the available options.

Because the bar cannot be dragged, the old lock option has no job left to do, which is the accidental-movement problem Baca describes. The trade-off is speed: users who switch positions often now go through Settings each time instead of grabbing the bar with the mouse.

Microsoft has adjusted other basic Windows 11 interactions recently, including the faster, customizable context menu in KB5127936. Baca's explanation was posted on X rather than in official Windows documentation, and Microsoft has not published the research data behind the decision.

Try attaching a file to an Outlook e-mail by dragging it and hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar to bring the window to the foreground. Once in the foreground, drop your file into the e-mail to attach it. You can also customize your taskbar with your favorite apps from Start’s All apps list by dragging and dropping over the taskbar to pin them. You can also drag and drop to the desktop via “Show desktop” at the very right corner of the taskbar.

    Drag&Drop on TaskBar not working (Windows 11 22H2 22621.1105)

    Hello there, this is Emily.

Unfortunately this is by design for Windows 11. You can drag from File explorer into the taskbar.

The only drag and drop that works in the latest Windows 11 version is if you right click an app from the All Apps list, and drag it and drop it on desktop or taskbar. That's for apps only, and only when you find the app via Start > All apps list.

Sorry. You can always use the Feedback hub (Windows + F) to request this as a feature.
